Who Do You Hate the Most in JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE?

At the least, I’m sure the translation team is getting their jollies, every single time they have to pick an evocative-by-legally-distinct codename for these villains. ‘Dan of Steel’ is very near delightful in how obfuscating it is.

Anyway, probably the best lesson Araki seems to have taken over from FIST OF THE NORTH STAR is that he makes sure each villain is as reprehensible as they can be. Steely Dan here isn’t a cool villain. He’s not fun to be watch. He’s a weasel who cheats to get ahead. It’s aggravating to see him on screen. The Lovers’ voodoo doll ‘sympathetic pain’ gimmick isn’t as flashy as previous Stand users’ powers, either. It doesn’t sound that interesting on paper, but it really makes you hate Dan more than any possessed doll or smoke spirit might. There’s just something especially odious and cowardly about a heel who’s going to twist the hero’s brawn against him instead of fighting his own battles.

== TEASER ==

And again, that’s precisely the point. A mangaka might feel the temptation to make him too likable.

Another way Araki’s showing some great patience as a storyteller is that he’s taken all these episodes to build Dio’s threat level up again. Honestly, I was a little disappointed initially that we’d be seeing a Big Bad repeat for this arc, but I get the sense that he was expecting that disappointment. Not only have we been introduced to more new villains than we met through the entirety of the first two arcs, each one has been steadily putting his master over.

Has it been too long since that awful incident with Jojo #1’s father? Do you not hate Dio’s as much anymore? Well, here’s this old lady who’s so hopelessly devoted to him, she doesn’t recognize his betrayal, even when he’s having her murdered. For Big Bad who hasn’t been on screen much for over a dozen episodes, Dio’s really re-earned plenty of our boo’s and hisses.

So yeah... let's watch GACKT play video games: Sonic the Hedgehog 4

As you probably guessed, GACKT is still on his couch looking cool and gaming. However, you might notice something weird. It looks like he might actually be trying! Even stranger, there seems to be a glimmer of fun peering from his darkened shades.

ONE PIECE Ch. 754 Review

The horrors of Toyland.
The horrors of Toyland.

There seems to be no end to the constant obstacles that keep appearing between Luffy and Doflamingo, and who could have imagined that even a 1,000 foot tall golem would be so outclassed by one man brandishing three swords?

The Good

It's always interesting to see talented artists imitate drawing poorly.
It's always interesting to see talented artists imitate drawing poorly.

I think it's safe to assume that I'm never going to tire of Zoro playing the total bad ass. In the previous two arcs, post time skip, Zoro has lacked any real challenge to show his new strength.Hyouzou was a joke compared to him, and he was holding back against Monet. I doubt even Picais in Zoro's league, but the display of power in this chapter is nothing to scoff at. For the first time,Bartolomeo and myself are one the same page.

I feel that the reveal of the ever illusive Kanjuro deserves some particular attention after I've seen his devil fruit powers. Now, the concept of the ink painting sorcery isn't anything new to Japanese culture and media. However, I can't help but wonder if Oda went to see ROAD TO NINJA and thought of the untapped, comedic potential of the bad artist Sai actually trying to use his particular brand of jutsu. Ultimately I really like it. It fits in with Oda's style to twist your preconceptions.

The Bad

Zoro is a man among men.
Zoro is a man among men.

I'm really starting to tire of this long road to Doflamingo. Oda keeps the writing fresh enough, and I'm enjoying Luffy's commentary. That's the only thing really preventing me from getting too bored with these scenes. This has just been going on for long enough. Thankfully it looks as if next week is going to spice up that sub-plot with the appearance of those disturbing toy soldiers. Is Sugar back in this fight?

Verdict 4/5

I could almost compare this chapter to a sandwich. Some filler pressed between a goofy comedy bit and a scene of pure, machismo awesomeness. I guess in that case this would be better compared to the KFC Double Down. Seeing how the outer layers had more meat than what's found in between. Oda doesn't linger for too long on any scene, and he picked a perfect moment to close out the chapter. It completely made up for Luffy's extended road trip.

RWBY Volume 2 #1 -- Special Review

We’re sampling the summer season’s selection! Check out our other pilot write-up’s –

Matt Murphy caught more of the Volume One than I did (I only got to see the first episode), but I’ve always still appreciated the kind of garage band ethos RWBY exudes. Is the product rough around the edges at times? Does it sometimes look like an animation software demo? Sure, but that’s really part of charm.

Lord knows, I’ve seen countless anime that had far more tools and personnel at their disposal, but none of that mattered because there wasn’t any heart behind it. Flash and polish is nothing is nothing without enthusiasm, and I can dig how Rooster Teeth is making the most of what they have. The fight in the cafeteria, with the towering stack of tables and the inventive use of food weapons, is an excellent example of that. You can smell the sweat and taste the tears that went into that - - a small animation crew pushing themselves and their gear as far as they can to entertain you.

== TEASER ==

Story wise, this feels a lot like a lost FINAL FANTASY 7 cut scene, and I’m sure the line of inspiration is very direct. Of course, like any FF game, there’s really only one point of entry, and if you haven’t watched from the beginning, then this isn’t going to be the best jumping on point. Certainly, I enjoyed the bounty hunters’ mean fake-out with the convict-cum-bookkeep, but I also don’t feel like I got enough of a proper intro to either of them to really feel that scene.

And again, that’s fine. More so than any other show I’ve watched on here, RWBY is a series I enjoy for the nature of its existence. It’s admirable of Rooster Teeth to keep the momentum RED Vs. BLUE started to push machinima into new content, and these are definitely getting more flashy and polished as they go along. I’m pumped to see how this Volume,and each forthcoming one, is going to shape up.

BLEACH Ch. 590 Review

Bring out your dead!
Bring out your dead!

Giselle Gewelle, the Stern Ritter Z, is the grand puppet master of the undead. You'll find no rest in death from her. Only absolute servitude and damnation.

The Good

I see her there with blood in her hair, and a flesh killing brat to beat, yeah.
I see her there with blood in her hair, and a flesh killing brat to beat, yeah.

I almost regret using up my Living Dead Girl reference a few months back for that Rukia chapter. How could I have imagined Kubo would reveal such a wicked character with such a vile ability? Thankfully, Rob Zombie has no shortage of songs about undead ladies.

It's nice to have a villains in fiction who aren't just bland, mustache-twirling baddies. Sometimes it's nice to actually understand their motivations, even if you don't agree with their methodology. However, there's also a different sort of joy to be had in a villain that doesn't just enjoy their own wickedness but revels in it. Seeing Giselle's absolutely disturbing grin just screams sadistic maniac, and I'm not ashamed to admit that she(?) gives me literal chills.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I'm really starting to feel bad for Bambietta. Which is an honest surprise for me. Seeing how when she was alive she was so violent and aggressive. This is a person who worked out her frustrations by slicing her compatriots in half. Now, she's on a level of a broken animal that looks for tenderness from the very one who beats her down.

The Bad

I was loving pretty much everything about his chapter until the reveal of the Arrancar. I'm not going to spoil the identity of these unlikely allies, but I personally found them somewhat lacking. It just felt as if a bubble burst. Maybe it was because I was hoping to see some other characters, or perhaps it more has to do with with this C team line up and their overly dramatic introduction.

Verdict 5/5

Never let it be said that Tite Kubo can't make an interesting and unnerving antagonist. He's really surprised me with the character he's given these Vandenreich girls. Watching the way Giselle manipulates her enemies and allies alike genuinely creeps me out no matter how many times I read this chapter. Within this one issue I'm going from one emotional extreme to the next. From repulsion to sorrow, and I love that reading experience. I wish the climax had been a better, but this is overall a fantastic chapter. I can't wait for next week.

BLUE SPRING RIDE #1 -- Special Review

We’re sampling the summer season’s selection! Check out our other pilot write-up’s –

Let me just say up front that the style in this show is really wonderful. The palette of each cell has a rich, granular quality which make every scene look like it was taken right out of a water colored art book. This is one of the few shows where you can probably frame any cell and appreciate its painterly gesture.

I’d also say that the premise is quite applicable. Adolescence is such a delicate time, and who hasn’t had a moment where they’ve liked a classmate, but couldn’t summon up the confidence to do anything about it until it was too late. Or they tried to reinvent themselves as somebody cooler in later grades, only to be conversely put off when an old friend is now acting too cool because they’ve done the same thing?

== TEASER ==

That’s all well and good, but it’s also applicable because it’s so basic, and the tricky thing about a show like this is that they’re sort-of criticism proof. I might say that this first episode was a little too slow, or that it didn’t have much of a hook by the end, or that none of the character’s personalities seemed distinct enough… but that’s really beside the point, right? As long it hits some basic points of the high school experience, it’s done its job.

I find these teenage romances to be a lot more amusing (and unintentionally so) as I get further and further away from high school. When you’re 16, it’s incredibly easy to put your crush on pedestal that’s so high up, he or she might as well be fictional character. This girl’s getting so out of sorts over this dude like he’s some super-cool mystery man, when it’s obvious that he’s just as much of an awkward doofus as she is.

On second thought, the fact that this pilot’s prompted such thoughts probably speaks to it having a little more going for it than a rote slice-of-life episode. It got me thinking. It got me feeling. What more could you ask for?

Watch "Page .1 " and decide for yourself.

TERROR IN RESONANCE #1 -- Special Review

We’re sampling the summer season’s selection! Check out our other pilot write-up’s –

My first thought was about this show’s animation budget, and how it could ever be sustained over a serial. Seriously, those first five minutes with the vandalism run (or was it a smash and grab?) on the research facility was feature film quality. Between the level of lighting effects and rotoscoping applied, it’s just far more rendering on display than you usually see in a weekly show. I can only imagine how much money was burned with that opener.

As for the plot itself…

== TEASER ==

The prospect of Watanabe and Kanno reuniting is saliva-inducing, and there’s a sharp hook, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t trying to like this more than I did. I don’t know… a big part of the appeal of a Watanabe show is that he always has a cool sense of humor. Even when COWBOY BEBOP and SAMURAI CHAMPLOO got into headier territory, there was always style. I guess he must just be getting all his jollies out in SPACE DANDY, because this whole thing was just so dour.

Sure, the notion of showing a hero’s journey from the perspective of the ‘others’ who are calling our protag to adventure is an intriguing one. I liked the conceit of these two pseudo-humans having to coach eachother on understanding human concepts like bullying so they can fit in. There’s something poignant, too, about an ordinary, picked on girl suddenly being plucked from her miserable life after a huge catastrophe.

But again, the telling of the story is just muddled. You see characters going from Scene C to Scene D, but the connection between two spots isn’t that clear. It honestly felt like they were hurrying to move things along to that big set piece with the exploding-building, so you get this odd paradox of a slowy-paced pilot that still feels rushed. It’s almost like Wattanabe is trying to get outside his wheelhouse and make LAIN, and he’s falling short of that.

Watch "Falling " and decide for yourself.

NARUTO Ch. 686 Review

So, I guess everyone wait your turn and no one attack her.
So, I guess everyone wait your turn and no one attack her.

Naruto and Sasuke may finally be reunited, but Kaguya has yet another death trap world to punish these shinobi who are out to spoil her long planned resurrection.

The Good

This chapter started off a lot better than they had been for a while. After weeks of teasing, we're only now starting to actually see some of the attacks Kaguya's been using to clear out the Naruto shadow clones. It's much more impactful to show me her abilities instead of telling me she's strong. The part that I really enjoy is Naruto being clever enough to pass around the Truthseer Orbs among his clones to avoid being an obvious target. I just don't understand why neither the original nor the clones don't use these openings to attack.

It's just unfortunate that we've seen these abilities before in Kimimaro. This only seems to reinforce my concern that Kishimotomay be out of original ideas. Nothing she's done to date really has the same impact as the ultimate attacks previous bad guys have used in the past.

The Bad

How could she miss in the first place?
How could she miss in the first place?

Kaguya, for all her immense power, sure makes for a rubbish antagonist. Her Black Zetsu son is constantly telling her what she should already know, and she keeps making ridiculous mistakes. Take this gravity dimension for example. We've already seen she has an acid dimension, but she selects the one we haven't seen for what I can only guess is the sole purpose of creating a stage for the inevitable sacrifice play at the finale. Why else would she select one that puts her at the same disadvantage as her targets?

Even the rules of this world are based solely around the current needs of the plot. Kaguya, a Sage-level Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are immobilized, but somehow Kakashi and a half-deadObito manage to run into the path of mid-air projectiles. Why? Because Rin is apparently an inter-dimensional being. That's why.

I guess I'm suppose to feel something for the death of Obito. However, he's been 'dying' for months now, and I'm not forgiving all the thousands he's killed or betrayed over this eleventh hour conversion. Not when his initial motivation was so childish. I wonder if Rin would have anything to do with him in the other world after all the people he's killed in her name?

Verdict 3/5

The chapter starts off really solid, but Kishimoto manages to sour the fun of the action by trying to mix in some drama that wouldn't surprise anyone past the age of 10. Ultimately, I feel that Kishimoto spoils what could have been a pretty nice closing to the issue by his attempt to over dramatize it. All of Obito's internal dialog comes on so heavy that you know what's he's going to do far before it even happens. Sort of similar to that Samuel L. Jackson speach in DEEP BLUE SEA. I saw it coming a mile away.

Annotated Tokusatsu: Ressha Sentai ToQger episode 21

I love Fridays. Whenever this day arrives, I can’t help but to rejoice over the fact that the weekend has started. Even if I have to work during that time frame, there’s something refreshing about reaching the fifth day of the week. I guess this has to do with the feeling that comes from triumphing over the past few days in one’s routine-- kind of like beating an evil villain that was giving you trouble. However, Fridays can be a bit tedious when you add the word “Freaky” to the equation.

When you’ve watched more than five Super Sentai shows (maybe more than two), you start to notice that each series shares a few episode themes. One of these tropes is the body-switching segment, which is present in almost every Sentai installment. Based on my experience with the franchise, I haven’t had an issue with these chapters, as they managed to bring a new take on the overused premise.

Considering that ToQger’s having its first Freaky Friday episode, the major characters that partake in this scenario are going to have to go all-out to entertain us this time around. That being said, it’s time to find out if the rainbow train’s still on course.

When JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE Gets Really Gross...

I suppose it was only inevitable. Between Kakyoin’s cherry “luh-luh-luh-luh-luh” tick and Polnareff’s peak-a-boo with the piggy, we were going to see Araki’s odd… interests colliding sooner or later in this arc.

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that the squatters you run into throughout Asia really are that nasty to deal with. The show doesn’t go into great detail about how they work (thankfully), but when you’re at one of these things, you literally have to squat over the bowel and keep your balance as you take care of business (and hopefully avoid falling over, or getting any mess on yourself). Reaching for toilet paper is more difficult, of course. It’s usually out of reach, if it’s there at all. Actually, as I recall, you’re sometimes expected to use the squatter like a bidet, too, and wipe yourself with the toilet water.

So, needless to say, I have some very vivid memories of seeing some absolutely filthy squatters. And when Enyaba forces Polnareff to lick one clean, it’s an especially pointed piece of horror for me.

== TEASER ==

Ahem…

Anyway, it’s interesting that Jojo #3 is the one to save the day this time (and not just because Star Platinum inhalation of Justice is a rather inspired solution). When you step back from it, he hasn’t really been the focus of this arc. The first and second arcsshined almost entirely on Jojo #1 and #2. Adding these other Stardust Crusaders, and giving them commiserate screen time, has really made this more of a team book than what the title would suggest. Indeed, Jojo #3 has mostly been downplayed.

Part of that has to do with the character, I guess. Jojo #2 had a tendency to talk too much, while Jojo #3 is so anti-social that he doesn’t even seem to especially like talking. Hell, most of the time, it’s like he’s hanging back and letting the other Stardust Crusaders lead the way, and he’ll only intervene to fish them out of trouble.

Of course, given the fate Polnareff suffers here, that might actually be the shrewder strategy…

Watch "Justice Part 2" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.

Community Spotlight 7/27/2014

Greetings, Anime Vice Community! Convention season is in high gear this month, and I'm sure Tom is being kept busy. This is the week of the 2014 San Diego Comic Con, but he still found the time to post some reviews for JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE , PERSONA 4: THE GOLDEN ANIMATION , DRAMAtical mURDER , and ARGEVOLLEN . I'm sure he'll return with some interesting videos and news to share.

This may come as a bit of a shock, but the third season of LEGEND OF KORRA is being pulled from the Nickelodeon TV line up, but it's not being "canceled", in the traditional sense. There's word that it will be going completely digital, and there was a fourth season ordered. Further details will be shared at San Diego Comic Con some time this weekend. Stay tuned for that.
