Japanator Awards 2014: Sal’s Top 3 Toku Shows

Due to there being a short amount of tokusatsu airing on television these days, I was on the fence on doing a list about my favorite hero shows for the year. Compare to the 70s and 80s, there aren't that many shows airing besides the usual Super Sentai and Kamen Rider programs. While Garo has been receiving more installments lately, there still isn't enough content to warrant a special list-- even if the Ultra series releases a new series here and there. However, there are a few instances where we’re surprised with some unexpected projects like Akibaranger and After V, which means that there are some instances where the medium receives more stuff. Combined with a few original toku films that enter the scene once in a while, the tokusatsu industry still has some form of a fighting chance in this day and age; thus granting the medium the right to appear in its own special list.

Anyway, let’s get ready to transform, as we take a look at the top three toku shows that quenched my thirst for justice during 2014. As a heads-up, I’m only doing one series per franchise, since it wouldn’t be fair for the other contenders.

PARASYTE - THE MAXIM #12 Really Needs to Update

This show’s really starting to seem like it’s spinning its wheels. I’m not sure for what, though.

Maybe it’s because I just re-watched TERMINATOR at a friend’s place. One thing that really sticks out about that flick, now, is that the danger and thrills are very much defined by the technology of the 80’s. The Terminator’s hunt for Sarah Connor is limited by phone books, answering machines and pay phones, et al. And if you introduced GPS, smartphones, the internet or any number of gadgets we take for granted today, you’d have a completely different movie.

== TEASER ==

Obviously, there’s a bit of similarity between body snatching parasites and cyborg infiltrators. PARASYTE the manga isn’t that much older than TERMINATOR, either, and the show’s prided itself on being a largely faithful adaptation. As such, there are a number of points that are subtly starting to show their age...

For one, the high school setting might’ve seemed fresh when it first debuted, but it’s so commonplace in anime, now (as many of you Vicers have noted). The insistence on keeping all this action there is doubly infuriating. Likewise, Shinichi’s quick line about texting Kana in this episode hangs a lampshade on how the crew’s only superficially updated the plot beats. They’ve thrown in references to modern tech without adjusting anything around it. The whole love triangle, for instance, is largely dependent on these kids just happening to run into eachother on the sidewalk (seriously, these been almost a dozen of these moments) - - instead of, y'know, texting or tagging eachother.

That’s less consequential when put next to the public’s reaction to the invasion, of course. It makes more sense for society to be this slow to panic - - or to just accept some weird PSA about pulling your friend’s hair out - - if the number of information outlets are as limited and controlled as they were in the late 80’s. Transplantthat to today, though, and it’s a lot harder to buy that nobody would find it strange that this teenage girl would be torn apart in the same way a big chunk of Shinichi's school was. It hat to nit pick, but this plot hole is growing so wide, it's hard to focus on what the show wants me to.

Watch "Kokoro" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

RAGE OF BAHAMUT Jumps the Shark...?

There’s really only one episode left in this series? PSYCHO-PASS 2 was a half-season, too. As was BLADE & SOUL. Maybe that’s the trade-off for the animation quality? When the first episode dropped, we all asked how they could afford to render at this level on a weekly basis. Well, evidently it’s easier to do when you have half as many episodes to deliver…

This might explain a lot of my issues with the pacing, too. If felt like there was an anxious rush to cram an epic ensemble on screen before we got to the end.

== TEASER ==

And if that really is the case, I’ll continue to blame the licensors. If you only have a half-season, then you should only deal with half as many characters. The problem really boils down to how this episode has this awful redundancy where two heroic (or semi-heroic) characters turn evil by demonic possession. Why does Favaro’s heel-turn feel less impactful as a betrayal? Because it’s competing for screentime with Jeanne D’arc’s heel-turn.

Think about that. Favaro is supposed to be one of our leads, no? Why isn’t the focus on him? Why is it getting put on a secondary (or tertiary?) character, with far less personality, who was never introduced in any memorable way?

Likewise, Rita really gets short-shifted here. The concept of zombie girl with the mind of cranky granny is interesting enough to sustain a whole series. She’s a great foil for the other leads. More importantly, we care about her because a whole episode was devoted to introducing her. Yet, she’s competing for screentime with Beezlebub, Martinet and a whole host of easily forgettable creatures here.

I mean, gee… if any one of those guys was meant to be the main villain, don’t you think it would’ve made more sense to use a whole episode to set them up instead? Now that we’re rushing to this climax, it’s just a bunch of figurines floating around Bahamut.

I’d wish for a fan edit that cut out all this awful mumbo jumbo, and focused on our leads’ adventures, but unfortunately, a fan edit can only subtract scenes. We’d still have an incomplete show.

Watch "All Roads Lead to Abos" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episodes.

Krillin Gets A New Look in the Next DRAGON BALL Z Movie

Seems like "the F is for Resurrection" marketing team has gotten a wee more savvy about parceling the movie's surprises out...

Here we are with another "leak" from the forthcoming issue of WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP (by way of ANN ) -- and not too long after a previous "leak" revealed the green track suit Gohan's wearing on his off hours.

This time, it's Krillin who's got new duds. And a new job, apparently. The inset raises a question about this ("What could have happened after the last film!?") without offering an answer; so, presumably that's one of the hooks meant to entice you into watching the movie in theaters.

When/why/how did baldy become a cop?!

== TEASER ==

It's always easy (and fun!) to dog on Krillin for being the Z-Fighters' runt/mascot. I appreciate that Toriyama has made it that much easier, once again, by putting this guy on what amounts to a space segway It's amusing to think this movie will be about Goku's entourage having to hang up their orange gis and get real jobs after Bulma's big birthday bash. Of course, we know trouble's going to rear its head again, and Officer Krillin's going to be right there -- chasing after it at a reasonable speed under the limit.

DRAGON BALL: The Red Ribbon Army Saga -- Does It Hold Up?

This one didn’t play out like I was expecting it to, at all. Call an arc “the Red Ribbon Army saga” and you expect to see Goku fighting waves and waves of footsoldiers and war machines, no? Instead, this is basically a second tournament arc, with our plucky young hero squaring off against colorful (and almost totally unrelated?) opponents, one by one, as he basically ascends a match pyramid. Tower levels separate the bouts, not tourney brackets, and that’s really the only major difference.

Not that I mind that, necessarily -- it just puts a real point on how plotting really is secondary to character here. Hell, Goku fights a fat, pink monster that might as well be an unfinished conceptual sketch for Majin Buu. I might remark on how the Frankenstein monster being named “Android 8” surprised me (having not realized there was such a lineage in this mythos), but I doubt there’s much connecting him to Android 18 beyond Toriyama simply not wanting to let some perfectly adequate alliteration go to waste.

== TEASER ==

Honestly, the guy’s thought process is only barely hidden under the surface of the show. When you watch JOJO’S, it’s fun to speculate on which “video nasty” horror movies probably inspired Araki. Or to wonder if Togashi got the idea for the “Chimera Ant” arc of HUNTER X HUNTER after watching ALIENS. With Toriyama, there’s much less room for speculation. He got the idea for the “Saiyan Saga” after watching SUPERMAN II, and he’s clearly plucking these characters from whatever was on TV while he was working at his drawing board. Is the station re-running TERMINATOR? There’s Sergeant Metallic. There you go.

The whole bout with Sergeant Purple totally has the vibe of a classic Loony Toon, too. Goku vs. a pompous ninja might as well be Bugs Bunny against Yosemite Sam, no?

As much as I pick apart the show, I’ll be the first to admit that the show remains genuinely funny, however many decades after the fact. I have to think, though, that there’s an added level of comedy in realizing how scatterbrain Toriyama was when he was cooking this up. It’s almost like he was aiming to craft a true epic with a fearsome threat, then got distracted by a butterfly flitting by and thought, "Hey... why don't we throw a bubblegum monster in here?".

Japanator Awards 2014: Sal's Top 5

It’s hard to believe that 2014 is almost over. While I didn’t get to watch a lot of anime shows during the year, there were still a few titles that brought joy to my life. I guess you could say that I was lucky with the choices that I made throughout the year. Also, I blame my obsession with heroes who vanquish evil while wearing spandex and/or leather suits, since I could’ve been keeping up with more anime titles instead. Curses! Just kidding.

With introductions out of the way, it’s time to get this show on the road.

Japanator Awards 2014: Jeff's Top 5

It was a great 2014 in terms of the anime mill--each season offered something pretty special, and a wide variety of interesting titles. Still, a handful of title rose to the occasion for me, and I didn't have much of a problem doing a top 5 or 6. I'll pull my hair out if you asked me to do a top 10, since there are a dozen shows that will compete for the remaining 4-5 spots; it's that kind of a year. And if my taste in anime was wider and I had more time in 2014 to watch more shows, it would have been impossible to do a top 10. There were so many solid shows in so many different categories. Anyways, let's get started.

Japanator Awards 2014: Josh's Top 5

It's that time of the year, everyone. That time that tells us to think back on the year that just passed us by, and see what of it was best worth remembering. Memories made, lessons learned, and most importantly, Japanese cartoons watched. It's the 2014 Japanator Awards!

Well, "awards" may be something of a misnomer this year, as we're going personal this 2014. This year, we're each picking out a handful of our favorite artifacts from Japan's pop-cultural landscape. Given what's usually covered on Japanator, those favorites are likely to be anime television series, but we could be picking movies, live-action shows, or what-have you. Whatever it took to make 2014 a year worth remembering is fair game.

So let's get on with it!

Annotated Anime: Shirobako episodes 11

If you told me that an anime about working in the animation industry will give you one hell of a cliffhanger, I would not have believed you. That's because nobody would ordinarily associate a matter-of-fact approach to real life with page-turning strategies employed largely by pulp manga and daytime soap. It turns out Shirobako decided to show me otherwise.

BLEACH Ch. 610 Review

Ichibe has had it with these mothereffin' Vandenreich on this mothereffin' plane (of existence).
Ichibe has had it with these mothereffin' Vandenreich on this mothereffin' plane (of existence).

Ichibe is not one to falter in the face of overwhelming odds. He'll face Yhwach, The Almighty, at the cost of his own life to stop this villain's incursion of the Reiokyu.

The Good

He knows when you'll be sleeping. He knows when you'll be awake.
He knows when you'll be sleeping. He knows when you'll be awake.

Back when I first saw DEEP BLUE SEA in a theatrical preview screening, I saw the sudden and brutal death of Samuel L. Jackson coming a mile away. His speech as just so dramatic and meaningful. Don't get me wrong. I loved his speech, but I knew he was a dead man half way through. Maybe I'm a cynic, but I knew that nothing builds this much without a twist on the horizon. While everyone else around me jumped in their seats screaming, it didn't surprise me for a second when the shark burst through then tore him in half - SPOILERS.

That's why I can't find this chapter's closing at all surprising. Once Yhwach's full power was revealed, every beautifully crafted panel of Ichibe's oncoming attack just seemed to become one more nail in his inevitable coffin. It did make for a great spectacle and a very brutal finisher. Ichigo is now up against an enemy that can see all attacks coming. I'm actually excited to see how he accomplishes what Ichibe failed at.

The Bad

I asked for a better explanation for that sudden turn last week, but did I actually get one? The answer is a bit unclear, and I think it all falls down to the terminology used. It's the concept of Yhwach's eyes being "open" as opposed to "shut". Is this a translation issue, or does this more fall on Kubo's choice of words? I honestly can't say one way or another.

I will say that part of this does make some sense. Yhwach likely didn't wait a few more hours, because part of his plan required Ichigo to come rushing back in all haste. He needed that for his path to the Reiokyu to be open. Although, that implies that he knew both if and when Ichigo would undergo and complete training in the Reiokyu. Fiction sure does love their omniscient villains, huh?

I fully understand the concept that Yhwach's powers evolving in increments of nines. However, why was he pressing forward so far, so fast once he arrived at his destination? Look at just how close he came to defeat in last week's edition. A smart commander should have stalled for time. It makes me unsure of Yhwach is a brilliant or reckless leader.

Verdict 3/5

For as drawn out as this explanation appears in this chapter, it still has a lot of appeal to it with the visuals. The past few weeks of BLEACH have done their job. Yhwach is an enemy to be taken very seriously. I will be incredibly disappointed if Ichigo spends more time fighting Uryu-- a battle that I don't care in the least for -- than this guy. The NARUTO ending has had the effect of making me cautious when it comes to grand finale battles. I'm going to try and remain optimistic, because there is still potential to be had here.

BLEACH will be on a one week break, so enjoy the holidays.

HAYATE THE COMBAT BUTLER #2 -- Special Review

This episode begins with supply-side Santa Claus (who apparently was not content to merely insult Hayate in flashbacks and fantasy sequences the way he did in episode 1) returning to harass Hayate in his dreams. He reminds Hayate that, even though Hayate rescued Nagi from a band of evil kidnappers in episode 1, Hayate’s original plan, before accidentally stumbling into an act of heroism, was to kidnap Nagi for himself. So even though Nagi, and the rest of Nagi’s extraordinarily wealthy and lavish household might think Hayate is a champion, supply-side Santa knows that Hayate is really a sinner.

Chris Cringle’s guilt trip doesn’t seem to faze our hero though. And shortly after Hayate awakes in Nagi’s family mansion, he manages to leverage his earlier heroism into a job as a high-paid butler, working to carry out any tasks Nagi might like him to fulfill. To the surprise of Nagi’s household staff, Hayate (who really doesn’t seem at first glance like he’d be cut out to work in the service industry) takes to the job like a duck to water. And as he expertly cleans the various rooms of the mansion, Hayate sings a song of joy in his heart because he knows that at this rate, it won’t be long (relatively speaking) before he’s earned enough to pay back the ¥156,804,000 debt he owes to the Yakuza.

== TEASER ==

Things take a turn for the worse however when Hayate enters Nagi’s room and stumbles upon a book from her Manga collection. Nagi, upset that a) Hayate found one of her personal private Mangas, and b) Hayate didn’t recognize what an incredible piece of art it is and referred to it as a “Picture Diary” Nagi banishes Hayate from the household.

The moment Hayate leaves the mansion and returns to life on the streets, the Yakuza, who for some reason knew that Hayate was staying at that house, and knew the exact moment he’d be leaving (Maybe they’re following Hayate on Twitter and they saw a post about him getting fired? I don’t know. It’s never explained) scoop him up and take him to the docks so they can put him on a ship and sell him as a slave.

However, in the time it takes the mobsters to transport Hayate across town to the docks, Nagi’s head maid, Maria, reveals to Nagi that she found a note in Hayate’s raggedy old jacket, detailing the fact that Hayate is in massive debt to the mob. Realizing that her banishment of Hayate could lead to serious life-or-death consequences for Hayate, and not wanting her butler to fall to grievous harm, Nagi decides to charge to Hayate’s rescue.

Donning a (ridiculous, obvious, paper-thin) disguise and calling herself, “Mask the Money,” Nagi confronts Hayate’s kidnappers and defeats them using the mightiest power known to man-kind. Cold hard cash. That is to say, instead of fighting the Yakuza off, which she can’t do, she merely pays them ¥156,804,000 on Hayate’s behalf, and arranges it so that now, instead of being in debt to the mob, Hayate is in debt to Nagi. It’ll be a lot of hard work to pay off a debt that large. But Nagi let’s Hayate know he doesn’t have to worry too much, as she’s decided to generously reinstate his position as her butler.

Once again, there wasn’t very much “Combat” in this episode. So I’m starting to question whether or not it’s really accurate to call this show “Hayate the Combat Butler.” But there was once again a great deal of humor and hilarity. Plus Manga references, Gundam references, Sailor Moon references, and a snarky narrator who seems to enjoy stepping on people’s lines, cutting to commercial early, and just generally screwing with the characters on the show. All of which I enjoyed. What will happen next week? I can’t even begin to guess. I suppose I’ll just have to watch and find out.

Watch "A New Beginning with Nagi Sanzenin's Estate" and decide for yourself.

AH! MY GODDESS! #2 -- Retro Review

Picking up essentially where Episode 1 left off, “Ah My Goddess” Episode 2 begins with the beautiful and kind-hearted Goddess Belldandy explaining to the chronically unlucky human Keiichi that, due to his pure heart, the heavens have decided that it’s time to properly balance the scales of fate which have been so unfairly tilted against him for the majority of his life. To that end, it has been decreed that Keiichi shall be rewarded for a lifetime of honorable behavior in the face of adverse circumstances by receiving a visit from a Goddess (i.e. Belldandy) who is authorized to grant Keiichi one wish.

(I found it slightly alarming when Belldandy mentioned in passing that, when she says she’s prepared to grant Keiichi any wish he might ask for, she means literally any wish, up to and including the complete and total destruction of the world if, hypothetically, that should be his heart’s desire.)

== TEASER ==

But of course, a pure soul like Keiichi would never wish for anything as horrible as total planetary annihilation. And Belldandy knows it. She believes with all her heart that he’s a good person. And that, surprisingly, is what shocks Keiichi more than the fact that a floating, magic-using, supernatural being has mystically materialized inside his living room. The idea that a girl as gorgeous and wonderful as Belldandy would genuinely like him, and respect him, and think he’s a cool person, even though he’s not particularly tall or athletic, and he’s not super-handsome (at least not in a superficial celebrity sense) and he has no money.

(Seriously, they go around in circles over this for quite some time. The idea of a pretty girl looking past materialist surface issues and valuing him for the good person he is on the inside is like this bizarre alien concept that Keiichi just cannot seem to wrap his head around. I don’t know if that’s a deep commentary on how a lifetime of rejection can lead to low self-esteem, or a commentary on how much modern consumer culture has warped our perceptions of what’s most important in a person, or if the show was just trying to save money and they figured the longer that Belldandy and Keiichi sit in a room and talk, the less work the animators will have to do.)

In the end, even though Keiichi remains skeptical, he finally finds it within himself to gather enough courage to make a wish. But not just any wish. A wish that will change his life. Since Belldandy seems like a great person, and the brief time he’s spent with her has been more pleasant than…just about any amount of time he’s spent with anyone in his life, ever: Keiichi decides to wish for Belldandy to stay by his side forever.

So it is spoken, so shall it be. And before either one of our protagonists quite realize the full implications of Keiichi’s wish, a light flashes through the room, and Belldandy learns that, in keeping with the wish, she must henceforth relocate from heaven, and begin living on Earth with Keiichi.

An arrangement which one would think ought to change Keiichi’s life for the better. And yet, almost as soon as the wish is granted, things begin going wrong.

For starters, Keiichi’s upperclassmen return from their night out, discover Keiichi alone with Belldandy and, believing that Keiichi has violated college rules by sneaking a girl into a boys–only dormitory, promptly banish Keiichi from the school grounds, throwing him and Belldandy out into the street in the middle of the night. Now homeless, Keiichi and Belldandy wander from place to place in an attempt to find shelter for the night. Keiichi at one point even nobly offers to sleep outside on the street if one of his female friends (who doesn’t have enough room to shelter two people) will at least make room in her apartment for Belldandy. But alas, it is not to be. Belldandy informs Keiichi that, now that he’s wished for the two of them to be together, any attempt to separate will be seen by heaven as a violation of the wish. This will cause a great power called “The System Force” to go into effect, and inflict Keiichi with all sorts of bad luck.

By the episode’s final scene, Keiichi and Belldandy are forced to find shelter by sleeping inside an old abandoned car. Not exactly the most auspicious beginning to their relationship. But to her credit, Belldandy proves that she meant what she said about not caring about superficial concerns like money or luxury or…having a house. And despite all expectations, she actually seems to be genuinely enjoying the times she’s spent with Keiichi so far. The two stay up happily and lovingly talking about their lives, their families, their pasts, and the future they hope to build together.

All in all, this wasn’t exactly what I’d call an action packed or a fast paced episode. But it did what an “Ah My Goddess” episode should do. It showed that, no matter what else might be going on around them, the bond between Keiichi and Belldandy is unbreakable. What will happen next episode? Keep it here to find out.

ONE PIECE Ch. 771 Review

There is such a thing as being too helpful. Sai faces off with Lao G and his own grandfather to prevent Baby 5 from doing something reckless that they'd both regret.

The Good

I've never been the slightest bit shy about my irritation with Baby 5's codependency issues. There just seemed to be no end to the abuse she would accept. I thought her personality might at least be good for a couple of laughs after reading last week's chapter. However, imagine my surprise at the turn we get here.

In almost no time at all, Oda gives a pretty solid explanation for her self destructive behavior. Not only was she neglected and abandoned by her own mother for nothing more than being a child who couldn't do much, but she found herself in an environment filled with people who took advantage of her desire to help others and only encouraged it.

For as honorable a guy as he has shown himself to be. Remember that Sai also has some of his own personality issues. Back in the beginning of this arc, he flipped out on Luffy just for appreciating his help during a misunderstanding with the tournament officials. These two quirky lovebirds may have been made for one another.

It wouldn't feel right to only focus on Baby 5 and Sai. Lao G adds plenty to this chapter in the way of humor by his unique martial arcs. Hey, if we can have Drunken and Crane Kung-Fu, why not Geriatric-Style? Can you just imagine how many years that takes to master?

The Bad

I have no problem with Baby 5 finding love and real acceptance with Sai. I hope only the best for her. I just wish she had found self worth in herself before she formed a real relationship with anyone. Although, if she's going to end up hitched to anyone, I'd rather it be someone who wants to protect her and improve.

I believe the Japanese publication of this chapter included the results of the Japanese character popularity poll. I was disappointed to see it wasn't included in the English edition.

Verdict 4/5

It just never stops amazing me how Oda can make side-characters feel just about as entertaining as the primary cast? It's not as if I'm saying I'd want entire arcs dedicated to these people, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest with how much screen time they're getting in this arc. Part of that is clearly the creator's experience in character creation and writing put on full display. In fact, I'd enjoy checking up on Sai and Baby 5 from time to time in the future.

ONE PIECE will be on a one week break, so enjoy the holidays.

A Daily Dose of Music: Chelsy

We're hitting the home-stretch of 2014, but that doesn't mean that the amazing music from Japan is going to be slowing down. Today we take a look at the adorable three piece from the Honey Bee Studio team's latest effort, YES. I actually don't know much about the group, except the fact that they are well known for wearing various "horns" during their performances, much to the delight of their otaku fan-base.

It's a lovely, chill rock song, never getting too extreme in any direction. Definitely a band to keep your eyes on in the net year!

Prophecy unveils a creepy new live-action trailer

The uber popular manga Prophecy, written by Testuya Tsutsui is getting an adaptation on the big screen in Japan. The tale of unfulfilled justice and judgment makes its debut in theaters on June 6th, adding to the already solid summer movie line-up. I hope the film can give the slow burning crime thriller a bit of justice, as the shots look pretty good so far!

HAYATE THE COMBAT BUTLER #1 -- Special Review

Hayate the Combat Butler (or “Hayate No Gotoku” as it’s known in the original Japanese) has got to be one of the most bizarre mad-cap off-the-wall anime series I’ve seen in a long time. And yet, despite all its irreverent zaniness (or perhaps because of it) I was surprised to find myself belly-laughing all throughout the first episode of this series.

Our story begins at Christmas time as Santa Claus, the living embodiment of love and sharing has a warm heart-to-heart chat with our protagonist, Hayate Ayasaki, and tells Hayate straight up that Santa won’t be visiting Hayate’s house this year because Hayate is poor and poor people don’t get Christmas presents (I guess all that red Santa wears means he’s a Republican?) In response, young Hayate resolves to buckle down and work hard so that when he grows up, he can have money. Hayate is certain that through hard work and honest effort, he can get ahead in life.

== TEASER ==

But alas, time skip ahead to a future Christmas a few years later, and we see this isn’t necessarily the case. By the time Hayate is a teenager, he’s made a name for himself as one of the strongest, fastest, most efficient bicycle delivery couriers in town. But when his boss fires him (it seems Hayate lied about his age in order to get the well-paying job) and gives all the money Hayate earned on the job to Hayate’s parents (degenerate money-splurgers who fritter it all away and then skip town) Hayate finds himself over 100 Million Yen in debt! Hayate doesn’t have time to mope around like Charlie Brown over his Christmas troubles though. Because before long, Hayate discovers that his loving parents left him one final parting gift on their way out of town.

Wait, did I say Hayate’s parents left him a gift? I meant to say that they left Hayate as a gift. To the Yakuza. Who show up at Hayate’s door, saying Hayate’s parents have legally authorized the mob to take Hayate as a slave in the event Hayate can’t pay off the debt his parents owe! (What can I say? It’s just that kind of show.)

Around the time Hayate escapes the Yakuza by leaping out a second story window, crashing to the ground, and fleeing into a nearby park, our protagonist (whose lifetime of honest work has left him friendless, homeless, and freezing in the Christmas cold) begins to question whether the traditional protestant work ethic espoused by supply-side Santa Claus is really a practical means of climbing the social ladder in 21 century society.

That is to say, Hayate basically comes to feel, “Hey, all my life I’ve been doing honest work like a sucker. And everybody else has been acting like a corrupt crook. And they’re all way above me, and I’m way below them…maybe I should start acting like a corrupt crook too. Maybe that’s the way to get ahead in life.”

Having arrived at this epiphany, Hayate soon stumbles upon Nagi Sanzenin, an extremely rich girl who seems to be lost in the park, and decides to kidnap her, then sell her back to her parents for ransom money.

Before Hayate can actually start down the path of corruption however, a pair of thugs decide to kidnap Nagi for themselves, and no matter what bitter painful experiences Hayate may have had, he just can’t stop the honest, caring side of his personality from shining through, and before he quite realizes what’s happening, he finds himself rushing to Nagi’s rescue.

By the end of the episode (after getting run over by a car and suffering injuries that would’ve killed a lesser man) Hayate manages to rescue Nagi from her kidnappers. As a reward for his efforts (and because she seems to have developed a bit of a crush on him) Nagi decides to invite Hayate to come live in her family’s mansion, and work there as Nagi’s personal butler. (A job which I’m guessing may entail some form of…combat, somewhere down the line.)

Seeing as how I haven’t seen a series quite like “Hayate the Combat Butler” in a long time, it’s extremely difficult for me to guess what’s going to happen next. However, given how hard the show’s wacky and unpredictable antics made me laugh in the first episode, that might be a good thing. All I can say for now is, if the rest of the series makes me laugh as hard as the premiere episode did, I’ll definitely keep watching.

BLEACH Ch. 609 Review

He could answer Goser's question without lying.
He could answer Goser's question without lying.

There is power in the name of Yhwach. One that Ichibe can not strip away so easily.

The Good

The origin of Bankai.
The origin of Bankai.

Ichibe has put on a pretty good show for us, but it looks as if this battle has come to the inevitable conclusion. No one can claim that he didn't put on one hell of a spectacle. No more so than in this chapter. I especially enjoyed the insight to the origins of Bankai. I'm fairly crestfallen to see the Zero Squad leader going out in this way. Part of me was wondering if Yhwach would somehow turn the Zero Squad against our incoming heroes.

Some may wonder why the "name" of things is suddenly so important. However, if you take a minute, you'd realize a moniker has been at the heart of the BLEACH series for a very long time. You need to know the name of a zanpakuto to reveal its power, and Kido has more punch when you use the incantations. This is nothing new. More recent events have just done more to make that clearer to the reader.

The Bad

Okay, here's the problem I'm having. If any power Yhwach sees can't harm him, then how is it that Ichibe has been slapping him around? Yhwach has been visibly shocked and confused during this fight. There's some talk about his eyes being shut, but I've seen them open. If this was his power, how was he ever defeated by anyone ever?

I almost have to wonder if Kubo is making some form of meta-commentary with Yhwach's skill set. Nearly all battle-shonen series concludes on the hero overcoming a god-tier villain or its equivalent. Kubo just comes right out and calls this guy, "The Almighty". There's also the shonen staple of explaining abilities to the enemy. Well, Yhwach doesn't need to hear your exposition. He just needs to see it coming. Currently, this comes across as an astonishingly cheap twist of nearly Shyamalan proportions. I can only figure that there's something left to be explained.

Verdict 3/5

I'm not at all bothered by this outcome. We all knew it was coming. To date, I'm just more disappointed in the reasoning for it. Calling Yhwach the "Almighty". You might as well just call him God, at this point. I just can't let the outcome of this chapter taint the enjoyment I've had with this battle over the past month. Maybe there's a twist coming or at least a better explanation. If anything, he's certainly justified himself as an end series antagonist with this level of power.

FATE/STAY NIGHT: UNLIMITED BLADE WORKS #9 -- Special Review

This can best be classified as a “Breather Episode.” Not wanting to drown its audience with an overload of violence, destruction and explosive action, Unlimited Blade Works decided to take a short break after the pulse-pounding events of episode 8 and allow the characters to rest, recuperate, and regroup as the various factions strategize the best way to move forward into the next phase of the Holy Grail War.

Since Caster currently stands as the greatest threat to all the other players in the war, Rin decides to take advantage of the lull by working together with Shirou to try and identify Caster’s as-yet-unknown master, explaining to Shirou that if they can find the master and neutralize him, they should be able to eliminate Caster from the Holy Grail War before she can cause anymore chaos. (And taking several opportunities to grab Shirou, sneak off alone with him, and squeeze close to him in the course of their search. Coincidence? Possibly. But the bird-watcher inside of me senses that these may be the first steps in the mating-dance of the red-bellied Tsundere.)

== TEASER ==

Shinji, in typical spineless sniveling cowardly fashion, runs off to find Kotomine Kirei (the overseer of the Holy Grail War) and weaves together a long dubious self-serving story about why the recent defeat Shinji suffered in the war is absolutely everyone’s fault except Shinji’s. When Shinji wails that he would have fared better if only he’d had a more powerful servant, Kirei decides to help Shinji (while wearing one of the most sinister smirks I’ve ever seen) and instead of disqualifying the obnoxious little reprobate (as a proper neutral overseer is supposed to do) Kirei offers Shinji a newer, more powerful servant. (And so, like a stubborn turd in a toilet, just when we thought Shinji had been flushed, it seems he may return to stink up the room once again.)

Saber suggests a new strategy that she believes will help defend against attacks from evil enemies: Sleeping with Shirou. Er, that is to say, sleeping in the same room as Shirou so that she can protect him if any enemies sneak into Shirou’s house with intent to kidnap or kill him. Shirou feels that Saber’s suggestion could potentially lead to several…awkward situations, but due to the fact that enemies have in fact attacked him in his home on two separate occasions, he’s forced to admit that Saber’s idea does have some merit. So he meets her half-way and allows her to sleep immediately outside his room. (Uh-oh! The yellow-headed Badass may be moving in on the same prize desired by the red-bellied Tsundere! Watch out nature fans. I smell a love triangle approaching on the wind.)

And finally, as night falls on the city, Shirou reflects on a deep and eternal truth of the universe: Archer is a douche.

Overall, this was far from the most action-packed episode of Unlimited Blade Works. And a less charitable reviewer than myself might go so far to say that there were times when it felt slow. I would NOT however, go so far as to say that it was a bad episode. It may have traded UBW’s normal excitement for a day of lackadaisical calm. But I suspect we’ll soon see that this week’s events were merely the proverbial “Calm before the storm.”

Watch "the Distance Between Them" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

AH! MY GODDESS! #1 -- Retro Review

“Ah! My Goddess!” began as a manga series that was brought into being by acclaimed artist Kousuke Fujishima in 1988. Due to its popularity, (and the fact that Fujishima-sensei clearly enjoyed the world, the characters and the stories he was creating) the series would go on to run for a jaw-dropping TWENTY-SIX YEARS, getting its own 5-episode OVA, a light novel, a movie, another 2-episode OVA, multiple video-games, and 3 TV series along the way.

With this long running manga series having come to an end just this year, it seems only fitting that we here at Anime Vice, in a celebration of sorts to one of the greatest romance-series ever produced by any manga author…ever, devote a bit of time to reviewing one of the anime series which was based on the original “Ah! My Goddes!” manga.

(I suppose we could’ve reviewed the Manga. But…y’know…we’re “Anime Vice,” not “Manga Vice” so this seemed more fitting.)

== TEASER ==

Ironically, for a show titled “Ah! My Goddess!” the first episode of the 2005 Ah! My Goddess! Television series spends the overwhelming majority of its time NOT focused on a goddess, but rather on a human. Keiichi Morisato. A kind-hearted college sophomore who struggles to earn the respect and approval of his classmates at the Nekomi Institute of Technology but (due to the fact that he was unknowingly born beneath an unlucky star) seems to be cursed with misfortune at every turn, constantly failing at all his endeavors, and looked down on by nearly everyone.

Despite the fact that Keiichi is an extremely skilled mechanic who’s very adept at working with cars, motorcycles and any street machine that has an engine inside, his upper classmen in the Nekomi Institute motor-club always seem to saddle him with the most unpleasant and least desirable chores. Despite the fact that Keiichi is hard-working, money always seems to get taken away from him as soon as he makes it which leaves him chronically broke. And of course, despite the fact that he attempts to ask out women he likes with an earnest and open heart, they laugh at him and spurn his advances, leaving him sad and alone, with no girlfriend.

Keiichi’s situation changes however when he tries to make a phone call one night, accidentally dials the most spectacular wrong-number in history, and instead of contacting the party he originally meant to call, Keiichi is told that he’s reached…The Goddess Hotline. In Heaven. (A number which can only be dialed by people with pure hearts.) At first, Keiichi is understandably skeptical. But when the goddess who picked up the phone (a beautiful young woman named “Belldandy”) answers his call by magically teleporting into his room and saying she can sense Keiichi is a person in distress and she’d like to help Keiichi by granting him any one wish his heart desires…well…it’s clear that, no matter what happens, after tonight, Keiichi’s life is never going to be the same. What will Keiichi wish for? Will his wish bring about the change he’s long been looking for to alter the course of his luck and his life? And if the path of Keiichi’s life does change, will it be for better or for worse? Keep it here to find out next week as we move ahead to review Episode 2.

Watch "Ah! You're A Goddess!" and decide for yourself.

Toei Redraws SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL?

CRYSTAL was distinguished among SAILOR MOON iterations, and magical girl shows in general, for the more… expressionistic approach its art team took to rendering anatomy. Indeed, the show was so distinguished for this that a website actually popped up with the expressed purpose of… documenting the show’s style on a regular basis.

Now that CRYSTAL’s come to home video, Crystal Companions has a new and somewhat-unexpected purpose -- cataloging the extensive animation changes that’ve been made after the show’s initial airing.

== TEASER ==

Weekly production schedules can be grinding, obviously, and more frequently, anime companies are treating the first-run TV episodes as drafts which can still be tweaked and tuned until the product is totally and truly “finished.” Indeed, you might call these Blu-Ray releases “Special Editions” then.

While GARGANTIA ON THE VERDUROUS PLANET was a recent and memorable example of this, the changes weren’t nearly as extensive as the ones Toei’s made to CRYSTAL. Head over to Crystal Companions and you’ll see that some characters have been almost totally redrawn (and throughout the entirety of the show, no less). Clearly, Toei listened to detractors like this site, and the irony is that the same fans who were initially pointing out these… flourishes are now documenting the response to it, like some sort of fan service oroboros.

How many of you Vicers were distracted by all of this initially? Do you think the changes are improvements? What other show might benefit from this sort of re-drafting?

Gohan Gets A New Look in the Next DRAGON BALL Z Movie

Personalities can be cyclical, no? Perhaps it shouldn't be too surprising that Gohan would return to the nerdiness of his childhood now that he's a married family man.

The forthcoming issue of V JUMP magazine, as relayed by ANN, has revealed a few more details about the new DBZ feature film, F IS FOR RESURRECTION (translation still pending). The captions on the art above stress that Gohan is picking these duds up while pointedly hanging his Great Saiyanman costume away. It's amusing to think he'd have to calm down and get a real job after Goku saved the world in BATTLE OF GODS, but the more likely explanation is that Toriyama wanted a little more variety during the fights, and less dudes in orange gis.

== TEASER ==

(The even more likely explanation is that he wanted another figurine to sell).

The spot reveals a much clearer look at the film's new villains, Sorbet and Tomago, as well.

THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA -- Movie Review

It’s a shame that a large portion of Ghibli’s American fanbase views any non-Miyazaki film as a seat-filler. Isao Takahata directed THE TALE OF PRINCESS KAGUYA, and it’s better than THE WIND RISES by a wide margin. Depending on how WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE plays, of course, it may yet prove to be the studio’s most fitting final statement.

The film has been mis-marketed. The American trailer makes it look a quaint fairy tale, with its unusual brush stroke style being the major selling point. While that animation flourish (consciously evoking illustrations from the story’s era) is certainly marvelous, the real hook here is the pointed critique of celebrity, and the male gaze. If that’s difficult to get across in quotes on a poster, then let’s try something buzzier and say this is a sharp antidote to princess films.

== TEASER ==

Asking bigger existential questions (more on the order of films like THE FOUNTAIN), PRINCESS KAGUYA very viscerally puts viewers in the seat of the archetypal, perfect maiden featured in every fairy tale. What would really like to be known as the fairest of them all? What would it really be like to be put on a pedestal? What would it really like to be adored by everybody?

The most pointed scenes come when Kaguya sees the sharp disconnect between the lofty ideal her suitors are courting, and the rambunctious young girl her real friends know her to be. Sometimes, the gulf closes with humorous pratfalls, as she famously sets the richest men up off retrieve ludicrous, impossible treasures as her dowry. More often, the gap turns tragic, and we can feel her profound sense of guilt, realizing these young men got themselves killed chasing the idea of a woman, not even af person.

Without spoiling too much, the film’s finale is one of the most mesmerizing and thought-provoking scenes I’ve seen in any picture, live or animated, this year. When Buddha and his entourage descend from the moon, this takes on the quality of a true, classic tragedy that were likely absent in the original folk tale. Kaguya tries to escape her destiny and ultimately finds should prefer the humble simplicity of rural living with her family and friends over the burden of being a legend.

Tuturu: Steins;Gate's PS3 and PS Vita version go West

Now this is what I call an unexpected turn of events, people. If you've been yearning to play more visual novel titles on your consoles, then you'll be happy to hear that Steins;Gate's PS3 and Vita release are heading to North America and Europe in 2015. However, Siliconera's post on the Steins;Gate's console release confirmed that this version is being handled by PQube, and they're unsure if their version will have the same translation as JAST USA's release, since MAGES were the ones that gave them the build of the game.

Personally, I still think that this news is still a great turn of events for visual novel fans, since it's not everyday that we get titles like these on the consoles. In a way, it's almost like the Future Gadget Lab sent a text message to the past to make this dream a possibility. Who knows, if the game does well on the PS3 and/or Vita, then we might see an age where more console visual novel titles get released in the West.

Lastly, PQube's Evan is doing his best to ensure that Steins;Gate's PS3 and Vita version gets a physical release, since he doesn't want to live in a world where he can't own Steins;Gate physically on consoles-- in accordance to Siliconera's post. That being said, I that think it's safe to say that 2015 is going to be a great year for everyone.

PARASYTE -- What if it Were More Like the Manga?

You'd expect visual sensibilities to change a smidge over 20 odd years, no? Like JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE, PARASYTE THE MAXIM is a contemporary anime that's based on manga that's over a couple decades old, now. However, while Studio David stayed pretty quite true to Araki's designs when adapting JOJO'S, Madhouse took a bit of creative license with the cast of PARASYTE. One could only wonder how the show might look if they stayed truer...

== TEASER ==

Actually, none of us have to wonder. A more proactive fan went ahead and redid the shows intro, replacing the updated character designs with the originals. The effect is... marginally different, to be honest, but otaku are nothing if not detail-concerned.

Some of you have suggested that the show might actually be suffering a little from staying too close to the source material - - that the high school setting might've seemed fresh in the 80's, but it's not a bit generic in a field where many other shows are set in school. Myself, I'd prefer they take more creatie license, too. The fact that Shinichi continues to attend school like nothing's changed, despite the numerous on-campus battles that've happened, suggests a story crew who isn't scrutinizing the original plot as much as they should. Can we see some fan do that re-edit, please?

Sure, why not make game about Mushroom Girls?

Really, why not? The last few years have seen a Cambrian Explosion for weird games, and people are now taking notice of good ol' Japan, which has been doing weird for longer than just about anybody.

Of course, I could just be undermining everything I just said by highlighting Kinoko Collection (literally Mushroom Collection), a shroom-themed ripoff of Kantai Collection. Then again, I said "weird", not "novel", so perhaps I'm in the clear. Plus, the game's still in development for web and smartphone platforms, so the "gameplay" section of the official site is thoroughly lacking in concrete details.

They are, however, doing extensive character reveals, tipping their hand that the intended hook here is the titular Mushroom Girls, who are embroiled in a century-long conflict with Bamboo Shoot Girls because of reasons. The character reveals include a number of mushroom girls both common and exotic, such as fungus-next-door Buna-Shimeji, the prim and proper Enoki, the quiet and sullen Nameko, the martial and strong Eryngii (aka the French Horn mushroom), the energetic Fukurotake (the Paddy Straw mushroom), and the eccentric Maitake. Still more art and details are promised, but I'm hoping to see some gameplay before I declare a fungal revolution to upend Kancolle's dominance.

ONE PIECE Ch. 770 Review

Giving up his arm to lend a hand.
Giving up his arm to lend a hand.

While Luffy is forced to face an enemy that he doesn't want to hurt, the battles across Dressrosa wage on. Zoro faces the mountain manPica, and is saved from a sneak attack from a surprising ally.

The Good

Zoro vs. Pica
Zoro vs. Pica

Who knew going into the Dressrosa Arc that in the later acts you'd be cheering on that one giant character that Luffy clobbered with one hit for beating up his bull-buddy? That's a turn that comes completely out of left field, but I really adore that touch about Oda. This isn't just a story about the heroes versus the villains with nameless extras standing in the background. Even those in the grey areas can have the spotlight, once in a while. I think it's just one of the creator's quirks that just makes his world feel so alive and fluid.

To date, only two of the officers in the Don Quixote Family have been KOed for the duration. The first byUsopp, and now Machvise through a heroic sacrifice play from Hajrudin. Anyone who's earned Zoro's respect has surely won mine, as well.

For as much as Baby 5's codependency issues irritate the ever loving hell out of me. They actually got a pretty decent laugh out of me this week. This is a match up that I care little for, but now I wouldn't mind dropping in again on these two down the line.

The Bad

It may be out of context, but accurate.
It may be out of context, but accurate.

About the only thing that impresses me about the Luffy and Bellamy fight is that the laughing pirate actually manages to get a solid hit in on Luffy. I never would have figured he'd be an armament haki user. In that sense, he stands a chance of hurting Luffy. On the other hand, he's suppose to be half dead, and he stands a chance of hurting Luffy.

From examining those panels, it appears that Bellamy is punching Luffy in the gut that's shielded by his armament hardening. The strength of Haki is suppose to be determined by the will of the user. Does Oda really expect me to believe that a fresh Luffy has a weaker will than a critically injured Bellamy? That doesn't even take into account Luffy's observation haki skills. I understand that I'm geeking out in the minutia here, but am I really out of line?

Verdict 3/5

This is another case in where I'm glad Luffy's scene was gotten out of the way first then followed by a solid closing from other characters. Zoro and a cast of extras rightfully steal the show out from under the protagonist. They give us the laughs and action that this chapter sorely needed. Add in that surprise assist from Hajrudin the giant, and it leaves me coming out of this issue feeling pretty good after a lackluster opening.
