What's the True Origin of the Kamehameha in DRAGON BALL?
Wait -- am I actually writing up another episode of JOJO’s here?
It’s another head-smacker that I would’ve come to a long time ago (if I’d gotten a proper introduction to these characters). Capcom and SNK may have pilfered a bunch of their fighters from JOJO’s, specifically; but this is the first appropriated DRAGON BALL character I’ve spotted.
One of the combatants in the first FATAL FURY game was named Tung Fu Rue. He was an old, martial arts master with the ability to morph into a hideously muscular monstrosity. Sound familiar? Well, he was also bald, with a pointed white goatee… just like Master Roshi’s. I sincerely doubt that’s coincidental.

Since that pushes my thoughts over to fighting games (as will happen), I ought to bring up the Kamehameha (which, like Chichi, is introduced far sooner than I would’ve expected). I’m really starting to wonder if the Kamehameha, the Hadoken, the Ripple and basically every projectile attack in every fighting game ever have all been riffing on the same concept. Was there some specific folk tale that first put forth the notion of dudes throwing fireballs out of their palms? Was it JOURNEY TO THE WEST? Considering that Ryu from STREET FIGHTER was so famously modeled after real life karate legend, Mas Aoyama, might this have started with some installment of KARATE FANATIC?
Obviously, you’re seeing a fanciful extension of chi here. Instead of controlled breaths that throw more weight into an attack, it’s an actual electrical aura that flies out beyond the punch. The imaginative process would be easy enough to understand, but… still… it seems too specific to be that simple. And Roshi naming the attack for Kame, the god of Shintoism, and explaining that he learned the art from Kame itself…
…that seems exactly the sort of uncomfortable, non-PC religious explanation that would be made safe and more generalized by later franchises. It’s less uncomfortable to say that Ryu’s Super-Hadou comes from his power bar than it is to ascribe it to the heavens, isn’t it?
If any of you more learned Vicers know something about this, I’d love to hear some explanations. I'd kill to be enlightened.

Annotated Tokusatsu: Kamen Rider Gaim episode 34
Gaim has returned from its one week break, and the show doesn’t pull any punches with the state that the main cast is in. With many lives placed at stake, the Butcher (a.k.a. Urobuchi) continues to place Kouta and the gang in a more dangerous situation.
Since Redue’s actions might lead to Zawame City's destruction, the only option for survival is for everyone to fight for their life. It's too bad that's Micchy’s turned into a bigger meanie head, because his intelligence could've been useful in this situation. Oh well. At least we have an intriguing story that uncovers the Green Overlord's plan to obtain the Fruit of Knowledge.

LUPIN III Live-Action Trailer -- What Did You Think?
A while back, some of you Anime Vicers voiced concern over some comments director Ryuhei Kitamura made whilst discussing the level of realism he’d shoot for in this live-action LUPIN III movie. Specifically, he mulled over changing Lupin’s stalwart comrade-at-arms, Goemon, because the sight of a samurai running around in modern Japan would be too much today.
Well… all that concern seems to be totally unfounded, now that the trailer's out.

Short of maybe cranking the color saturation up even farther, I can’t think of any way the live-action Lupin could look more like Monkey Punch’s creation. And I guess Kitamura must have abandoned his concerns about Goemon, because there he is - - a samurai wielding his katana on a speeding car.
This looks like a whole barrel of fun. Though, I do find it amusing that it'll be an origin story - - showing how Lupin inherited his 'master thief' title after his father’s murder, and subsequently formed his gang. THE WOMAN CALLED FUJIKO MINE only just wrapped up last year, and that was another extended look at how these characters came to be (albeit from an angle focused on Lupin’s lady, where everybody kept to the 60’s setting). There's no getting past a good origin, is there?
Hopefully, this will be coming stateside soon. What do you lunatics think of it? Does it shoot new life into Lupin's legacy? Or does it bring shame to his name?

BLEACH Ch. 585 Review
Uh oh, Ichigo forgot to set his DVR to record the new season of KORRA before he left. Run, Ichigo, run!!
Ichigo's rush to aid his friends may have had a serious, unintended consequence that could shift the balance of this war, and he stands little chance of reaching Yhwach to stop him as Ichigo's surrounded on all sides by the Vandenreich elite. At least,...not without some help.
The Good
He gets by with a little help from his friends.
The previous few weeks may have been a touch lackluster, when compared to how well things have been going. However, events have really stepped up in this week's chapter. The consequence of Ichigo's speedy arrival is that he's left a gaping hole in the defenses of theReiokyu. Uh, whoops.
That part I think is kind of foolish, but everything that follows is pure awesomeness. Ichigo forces his way through an intense gauntlet of Stern Ritter attacks as he tries to get to Yhwach. It's pretty cool to watch Ichigo brushing off some brutal attacks from one bad guy after the next. It all ends in an appropriately spectacular finale, as Ichigo gets some backup.
The Bad
That's an oddly specific amount of time.
For as cool as some events were in this chapter, I'm sort of shaking my head at the premise that Ichigo arriving has left the Reiokyu vulnerable, due to his "clothes". Firstly, it's kind of ridiculous that it would be possible to leave the door wide open to one of the most secure locations in the universe due to the type of clothes Ichigo is wearing. Not to mention that the Zero Squad would fail to mention this consequence to him, so that he could be prepared for it.
This is just way too convenient for the bad guys. The Zero Squad may as well of dropped the keys to the palace along with Ichigo. Although, perhaps that's the point. It is way too easy, and there's another bit of protection of which Yhwach isn't yet aware. That's still plausible. We'll just have to wait and see. There's a grand total of 6,000 seconds (roughly 1 2/3 hours) in story time till the barriers are restored. If everyone remembers the "5 minutes" it took Namek to blow up, this could take a long bloody time.
Verdict 4/5
A little good and bad is taken with this week's issue of BLEACH . This still feels like a great set up for the battles to come. Even with some of the negatives I took away, I had a lot of fun. It's nice getting back into some action after two weeks of Ichigo just sort of standing around. Looking through the 13 Court Guard and Stern Ritter line up, It's a bit hard to decides who I want to see fight who. Will Rukia be pulling out her bankai once more, and what sort of new tricks does Byakuya now have? I can't wait for next week.

Fan poll selects most powerful robot
The argument about the strongest robots in anime is one that will continue in perpetuity. I mean, it's hard to get any sort of consensus about what to even include on the list. Giant robots are one thing, but do you include androids and gynoids? What about cyborgs? Well, Charapedia decided to hold a poll including all of the above and this was the result:
- Gurren Lagann (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)
- Doraemon (Doraemon)
- Ideon (Space Runaway Ideon)
- Turn A Gundam (Turn A Gundam)
- Gunbuster (Gunbuster)
- EVA Unit 01 (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
- Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam)
- GaoGaiGar (GaoGaiGar: The King of Braves)
- Arale Norimaki (Dr. Slump)

That's an interesting mashup there. The fanboy in me is positively pleased with the Gurren making the top of the list. Considering its potential, I'm not really surprised. I'm also not surprised that the Ideon was near the top, but I was surprised at Doraemon's position. Then again, a time traveling cat-bot with a magical pouch is bound to be pretty overpowered. Also, the Turn A Gundam's Moonlight Butterfly pushed it into the top five with ease. Also, the Gunbuster is always appreciated in my book.
