MAGICA WARS #1 -- Special Review

Join us as we view new pilots this season. See where they fit on the highly-scientific Rock-or-Suck Scale…

I ought to think of a better term for it, but there’s a unique breed of anime which I’ve come to describe as a ‘Steam Blow-Off’.’ The clearest example of one is FLCL...

Word is, that whole series was essentially the Gainax higher-ups throwing a bone to all the animators who’d just worked themselves to the bone making EVANGELION. After having to spend so many months, locked away in cerebral, Apocalyptic bleakness, they basically got to blow off all the steam they’d built up. FLCL was a quick, manic, exuberant explosion of creativity that didn’t need to make any sense.

Whenever I look at series like KILL LA KILL or DEAD LEAVES, I can’t help but think they’re coming from the same place, creatively. And I was thinking the same thing while watching the first four episodes of this. Sure enough, it comes from Gainax, too.

I’ve yet to see any micro series that ‘works’ like any plot-based showed is supposed to. Nobody’s really able to divvy their story up into increments that are satisfying. At best, I’ll just shrug over a snippet without a beginning or end.

What I appreciate about MAGICA WARS is that doesn’t make a pretense of being anything aside from an animation reel. It’s basically an artists’ sketchbook, brought to life, and that’s all it really needs to be. Don’t ask me to tell you what the plot was about. I don’t think the crew could really describe it any detail beyond, “Oh, it’s about a magical girl.” It’s just a beautiful looking show, from one of the most stylish studios, and again - - that’s all a micro-series like this really needs to be.

Watch the first micro-episode and decide for yourself.
