Top 20 Manga Series of 2013

Welcome everyone, here is Anime Vice's Top 20 Manga Series of 2013! This poll was started on January 30, 2014 and ended on March 15, 2014 (See Top 10 Manga of 2013 Voting Project). With you guys and gals' help, I was able to record 145 manga series for the voting sheet. Out of 145 entries, only 77 manga series got voted. 28 Vicers had voted, and submitted a total of 108 votes. This is your community's results! I was surprised by the results.

I was asked by many folks to start a manga poll contest since sickVisionz's top anime poll had an incredible response. Last year, we had about 50 voters. (See Top 10 Best Anime of 2013!) 2013 was the first time the community had voted for their top manga series. Another reason I wanted to start the poll was curiousity. I put some extra information to see where the community loves the most:

  • Are we leaning towards a particular manga publishing company?

  • Is weekly manga more popular than monthly manga series?

  • Are we predominantly Shonen manga fans?

I'm sorry for being a bit late with the results. With Screened closing down on March 14, 2014 and the Spring 2014 Guide in the works, it's a bit tough managing this poll and making the results. It was fun seeing the results. I put in about 5 hours today: working on tallying the numbers, making the list below, and double checking the math. If you want to see the Gdoc spreadsheet, here is the sheet.

1. Bleach

Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn't change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a shinigami (spirt of death) and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family, but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy.

2. Attack on Titan

Humankind is down to just a few thousand people who live in a city surrounded by three concentric walls. The walls protect them from their enemies, the ravenous giants known as the Titans. The Titans appear to have only one purpose: to consume humanity.

3. Claymore

A Claymore - a female warrior named for the sword she carries - travels from medieval village to village to destroy Yoma, monsters who disguise themselves as humans and who are almost impossible to kill. Claymores are half-humans, half-demons who willingly transformed themselves by mixing their blood with monster's blood. Claire, nicknamed silver-eyed killer, is such a powerful Claymore, she can slay a Yoma using only one hand. But she must constantly struggle to keep from becoming a monster herself.

Weighted System

For those who are wondering about the weighted votes and why I used them. Since our community is small, raw votes won't help decide the winners. As you see from the data, the most votes for a manga series was 9. There were many ties. I had to go back and figure out how my teammate sickVisionz carry out his calculations. After talking to him on Twitter, he told to me to used his formula. Here's the formula from I need your help for the Best Anime of 2012 votes! thread. I couldn't use the numbers since this poll uses 10 slots instead of 5 slots.
