Of course, throwing Anime Expo on July 4 makes plenty of sense. It’s a long holiday weekend. It’s probably easier to book the convention space. Also, call me crazy, but I’ll bet there are more than few hardcore otaku who’d rather check out the new Watanabe project than coo over some fireworks.
It makes sense, but it’s always inconvenient for me, scheduling wise. I had to take a late night flight back from visiting home on the 4th, coming down to LA just as fireworks were popping all over the city... and was I only able to catch one day of the con, unfortunately.

Still, that day was packed with fun. Surging with it!
This year might as well have been dubbed SAILOR CON 2014. As I mentioned in my CRYSTAL write-up, Sailor Moon’s return looks perfectly timed. She’s been gone long enough that the fans are simply grateful to have her back. Sailor uniforms seemed to outnumber ATTACK ON TITAN cosplay on the floor and, again, I can’t understate how rhapsodic the fans who packed the CRYSTAL screening got. Even as a guy without much attachment to that particular franchise, it was hard not to be impressed by a show having that kind of a positive impact on people.
Very curious to see how this revival will play on the pop landscape, going forward from this launchpad...
Still, the best part of AX2014 was getting our own Vice Pit Sentai Squad back together -- and then adding a special guest member. A Green Ranger, as it were.
Sam and I had the pleasure of seeing Super User Takashichea again this year (as he mentions in his own recap ). He puts a ton of great time and effort into our wiki's and community content -- and on a regular basis, no less. Anime Vice is made excellent by him, and by all the mods and users who work with him. So, of course, we forced him to join us as we mugged for the camera at the VIZ Booth, and then blasted ghouls away in the con's impressively expanded arcade.
Take it from me - - Taka's an absolute surgeon with a shotgun. When the zombie apocalypse hits, you're going to want him in your survival team. So were glad he joined us for something very cool and special and... cryptic, that you should be seeing very soon. Stay tuned.
And if any of you lunatics are planning to go to any other conventions this years - - I have Comic Con, NYCC, Comikaze and the Long Beach Comic Con on my docket - - please let us know. We'd love to see you in person, too. And measure how your zombie-fighting skills compare.
