A Daily Dose of Music: Old School Thursdays

Back in 2006, I was going through a major case of anime fatigue. It seemed like as anime was gaining popularity here in the west, I was slowly not finding any television shows to my liking. There was definitely a shift in palette, and unfortunately every show just wasn't catching my eye. That was all until a friend of mine had asked if I had seen the ending theme to The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, a show that relit my love anime.

While the song Hare Hare Yukai from anime's bad girl Ai Hirano was definitely the star of the show, with its silly dancing and silly lyrics, the opening theme Bouken Desho Desho, quickly grew on me and became one of my favorite anime openings. Ai Hirano's potrayal of Haruhi Suzumiya and her exquisite and unique singing skills drew me like no show at its time. For any readers that follow my tastes, you probably notice I'm a fan of seiyu that both sing and voice act, giving us the entire entertainment package.

Anyways, I won't bother going into the plot of the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and its follow up film and second series. It's a complex, twisted show that continues to be held in high praise, and is often imitated. Don't let the over saturation of merchandise turn you off from the fantastic show, it's still amazing to watch.
