JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE : STARDUST CRUSADERS #21 -- Special Review

To be fair, all stripes of pulp serial are going to find a way to resurrect their heroes eventually. However, while American superhero comics will reach for all sorts of convoluted processes to bring people back (time bullets?), it amuses me how anime often so gets blunt about it, and simply has character wish others character backs. Hell, DRAGON BALL did it enough that they couldn’t keep up with the usual life-or-death pretenses. Yamcha would be murdered, and Krillin would just shrug, figuring they'd wish him back eventually.

JOJO’s goes for much more of a MONKEY’S PAW approach, with the genie in question exploiting that ol’ semantic loophole by not specifying what condition the dead will return in. It made me want to shout at Polnareff through the screen, ordering him to watch MADOKA MAGICA so he’d know which clauses and provisos to append to his wish so as to avoid any tricks like this.

Either way, this was definitely the most emotionally impactful episode the show’s had in a long while. Even despite some cringe-inducing, on-the-nose “is this happening?!” lines, the animators actually make Polnareff ‘act” so well that it’s impossible not to feel for him in this frayed reunion. Likewise, the hard feelings Jojo #2 feels when he’s got to break the news to Avdol Sr., and the way Avdol literally runs from the bad news, was quite powerful.

Of course, this does harp on how Polnareff is a far more developed character than Kakyoin is. I don’t care if he kicked that baby’s ass last episode - - he’s still as much of a cipher as his Stand.

Likewise, the timing of Avdol’s return was oddly coincidental. While watching the intro this time, I was thinking about how his inclusion there puts a point on how rashly he was discarded. If he somehow gets over his zombification next episode, that’d actually make up for a lot.

Watch "Judgment, Part 1" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.
