The Worst DRAGON BALL Villain?

Eeesh. From my scholastic wrestling experiences, I can assert that B.O. is actually one of the deadliest offenses an opponent can throw at you. I close my eyes, and vividly smell it. That distinct, onion-scented aroma - - it's nauseating just thinking about it. So, needless to say, this episode hit close to home...

It's also one of the funniest episodes yet. And there's some irony to that, because I remember the arc with Gohan in the World Karate tourney in DBZ, and it played a lot less comically than this. I have to think that comes down the way super-moves are treated in the two eras of the show. DBZ obviously put loving attention on each step of a kata - - making a real showcase. Here, whenever Goku and Krillin fight, the violence is over in seconds. It's set-up, a few quick moves - - bang bang bang - - and then the aftermath of it. The concern is on the before and after. The punches literally work like punchlines.

== TEASER ==

While we're on that note, the fact that Roshi's alter ego pays less-than-subtle homage to Jackie Chan makes me think of something the guy once said about his fighting style. Basically, every martial arts star following Bruce Lee was trying to do the same thing, being very realistic and mean. Jackie went the opposite way, always reaching for the comedic potential in any set piece he did - - and obviously that proved to be the secret of his success. A round house kick from him was about the same as whipped cream pie being thrown by Charlie Chaplin.

Watch Krillin get brutally crushed - - again and again and again - - by his foe here, and after you're done cracking up, it's clear that Toriyama was thinking along the same lines. Hell, I'd say the fighting was actually more badass than what I've seen in other self-serious fighters precisely because of the sense of timing, and the lack of hesitation about being ridiculous.

And to answer the question posited in the headline... yes, I'd much rather fight Cell than this smelly dude.

Watch "Smells Like Trouble" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

NARUTO Ch. 693 Review

The population of the entire world is still caught in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, but Naruto and Sasuke have something to settle before they can really let this war end.

The Good

They'll have to rename this place the Valley or Reruns.
They'll have to rename this place the Valley or Reruns.

I'm really getting tired of only finding the will to praise the art of NARUTO , but the story has gone beyond derailed. I think the only enjoyment I got out of this was an ironic laugh at Sasuke for pointing out thatSakura has no reason to like him. Something he said actually made sense.

The Bad

These two need to fight right now because...reasons.
These two need to fight right now because...reasons.

It was nice having a week off not having to think about NARUTO, but look where we find ourselves now. The population of the entire planet are currently being slowly transformed into plant creatures, but the series apparently still needs Sasuke and Naruto to settle their childish rivalry right now. It becomes worse with the Sage of Six Paths just sitting there as witness to this bickering and doesn't even make any attempt to talk some reason into them. Not a single person is saying, "You don't have time for this." It's as if Kishimoto has either forgotten about that aspect or just doesn't want the audience to be thinking about it.

I understand that Kishimoto is trying the raise the tension, but his timing makes them both look incredibly irresponsible in the process. Do they even know how much time they have?

At this point, it's really pitiful, Sakura.
At this point, it's really pitiful, Sakura.

A lot of people like to criticize Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING for having multiple endings, meaning that the movie seems to end, then end, and find room for yet another end between the final end. Kishimoto has seemed to have taken that same theme so far as to be ridiculous. Ending this whole charade on the defeat of Kaguya and saving the world would have been great, but the creator has decided to drag us by the ear all the way back to the Valley of the End for yet another battle. There is no reason why they couldn't just settle this from their current location.

Some of you may try and claim there is something poetic about traveling all the way across the Land of Fire, but do any of you honestly believe that will be the actual end? I still haven't seen any press release announcing this as the final arc, and there is no way this series would get less fan fair than BLEACH 's final act. This series has at least another arc left in it, but with Sasuke and Naruto having their showdown now. I can't imagine what it would be about.

Verdict 1/5

It's pretty well official that we've crossed the four year mark from when the Shinobi Alliance formed and started the war to prevent the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Officially, it was more to protect the final two Biju and prevent Obito from casting the Infinite Tsukuyomi. That didn't work out so well. So, until that jutsu has been undone, you can't say this war has really ended.

This coming battle has been coming ever since the time skip. So, right there you know that this won't be a short one to two week fight. Don't be surprised if this doesn't bleed into November or December. Just let this end for real.

ONE PIECE #663 -- Special Review

I’ve often joked about how Luffy would most likely suffer a catastrophic emotional breakdown if he ever actually found the One Piece. You know, what’s this man-child going to do? If he gets what he says he’s searching for, then there’s no reason to adventure anymore, is there?

That day may never actually come, but I feel like I just got a very visceral vision of what it could look like because - - holy crap - - does Luffy fall to pieces when he sees this guy. It kind-of crosses the line from genuine, emotional relief to a damaged, psycho-somatic trauma trigger. Shinji would be looking at this, saying, “Hey, man – simmer down!”

And yes, I’m aware there’s probably 200 episodes of back-story that have built this particular reunion up. It’s still hilarious in this particular context.

== TEASER ==

What’s a lot less entertaining in this particular context is the opening third, which shows Minor Character A beating the shit out of Minor Character B. I’ve always found the definitions of ‘filler’ to be a bit overly-rigid, but I can see a lot more sense in it when a scene like this really does feel like slowly chewing on a corner of fat in your Porter house.

The scene where Franky’s strategizing with the toy militia was splendid, however. It tickles me to think that Oda might’ve gone channel surfing one time, left BABES IN TOYLAND on in the background while he was working, and then been inspired to have the Straw Hats just randomly dock on the Island of Lost Toys. Hell, we saw them come to blows with Candyland’s imperial fleet last episode, and there was that whole extended arc where Luffy fought Count Chocula (Foxy).

Have… the Straw Hats ever matched wits with Cap’n Crunch?

Watch "Luffy Astonished! The Man Who Inherits Ace's Will!" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

KUROKO'S BASKETBALL -- MOD Roundtable

Welcome to the Kuroko's Basketball Roundtable! Since the manga series for Kuroko's Basketball ended September 1, 2014, we wanted to commemorate this event. I'm here with sickVisionz, my partner in crime, who is known for his expertise in the music and anime industry. He also helps the community by creating the yearly Best Anime of the Year poll. Because we only watched the anime, the roundtable will only focus on the anime series.

For those who are new to Kuroko's Basketball, here is a summary our wiki editors had written:

Teikō Middle School's basketball team was well-known throughout Japan as the best basketball team with a prime three-perfect-seasons-in-a-row record. The regular players of the team became known as the Generation of Miracles.Once graduated, these five prodigies separated and each attended high schools with excellent basketball teams.

However, unknown to many, there was a sixth member of the Generation of Miracles, known as "the phantom sixth player". This phantom player has now joined Seirin High, which is a new high school with a strong fairly new and unknown team. Tetsuya Kuroko, who is the sixth member of the Generation of Miracles, alongside Taiga Kagami, a talented basketball player who spent most of his middle school years abroad in America, are now aiming to bring Seirin's basketball team to the top of Japan by taking down the former Generation of Miracles one by one.

What got you into Kuroko's Basketball?

sickVisionz: I was curious about the sports genre and wanted to give it a shot so I checked out a series called Giant Killing . I enjoyed it a lot and was interested in watching another sports show. I had heard some rumblings about Kuroko being good so I decided to watch a few episodes.

Takashichea: It was a recommendation from KuronekoXIII, my Canadian teammate on the Sket Dance and Guilty Crown Wiki projects. He was reviewing the anime until he didn't have time. He pulled a lot of Kingdom Heart references which made me curious. I tried it. I did dropped the show on the first episode, but I gave it another try, using the 3 Strike Rule. The colorful characters and Shonen battle manga style moves hooked me in.

Who is your favorite character? Least favorite?

Don't mess with Aomine
Don't mess with Aomine

sickVisionz: Daiki Aomine. He's a little arrogant and his basketball matches are always entertaining and extremely well animated. I don't have a legitimate least favorite. I either like or am neutral on all of the characters.

Takashichea: Ryōta Kise is my favorite character. He's a carefree guy whose good looks has all the ladies fall head over heels for him. I loved his determination against Daiki in their match. I like to use military terms for the Generation of Miracles. Kuroko would be scout with stealth, Daiki would be shocktrooper, Midorima would be sniper, Akashi would be commander, and Atsushi would be a tank. I never knew what to call Kise. I don't have much of least favorite characters. I would put Makoto Hanamiya, but he's designed for audience to hate him for his cheating tactics.

What's your best team if you had to assemble one?

sickVisionz: This solely based off of the anime, so characters that I haven't seen aren't included.

STARTING FIVE

  • Atsushi Murasakibara ... you need a big man low in the post.

  • Shintaro Midorima ... he's a sniper with height who can score points as well as play some

  • Daiki Aomine... an amazing player on both sides of the ball who is capable of completely taking over a game

  • Ryota Kise... honestly, he's only in the starting five because he's part of the GoM

  • Makoto Hanamiya... He isn't the best at orchestrating an offense but nobody can wear a team down like this guy. He's a master at breaking people physically and his scumbag actions will setup late game scenarios where the other team is too battered cope with our offense

THE BENCH

  • Taiga Kagami... he's like Daiki but less refined. I'd use him to give Daiki a rest but when we still needed to apply pressure

  • Shoichi Imayoshi ... a good ball handler, solid shooter, and is very skilled at orchestrating the offense. After Makoto does his work, this guy can make slim pickings of the defense

  • Tatsuya Himuro ... an amazing player with insane ball handling ability. Sometimes he will start rather than Ryota.

  • Junpei Hyuga ... a great shooter who can come off the bench and put numbers on the board.

  • Teppei Kiyoshi... a tough choice, but when he's healthy he's an amazing defensive player.

I don't have Kuroko on my team because I just don't think he's worth it. His magic pass is an amazing asset but it doesn't really take over games. You will still have close battles and honestly in a close battle I'd rather have a someone is a little worse than Kuroko at passing but significantly better at scoring and more of a presence on defense.

Takashichea: I'm not very familiar with basketball despite being a fan of the series. sickVisionz's team is pretty top notch. I can't compete with him.

  • Point Guard - Shun Izuki

  • Shooting Guard - Ryo Sakurai

  • Small Forward - Kise Ryota

  • Power Forward - Taiga Kagami

  • Center - Teppei Kiyoshi

What was the best match in Kuroko's Basketball?

Seirin vs Touou
Seirin vs Touou

sickVisionz: Seirin vs Touou Academy from Season 2. There was a lot of great animation and it featured two of my favorites really going at it.

Takashichea: It would be Kaijō High vs Tōō Academy since it involves my favorite character against a shark, Aomine. Despite Kaijō High's loss, it was an exciting match and shows another side of Karamatsu.

What was the most disappointing match you saw?

sickVisionz: While I don't love every match equally, I haven't seen one that left me disappointed.

Takashichea: I don't have a match I hated. Most of the minor matches were short while the Generation of Miracles matches were longer but not too overstretched.

What were things you enjoyed in Kuroko's and things you didn't like?

sickVisionz: I like all of the characters, which is very rare for me. Especially in the shonen genre where there are a lot of tropes that instantly turn me off. I also love the animation. Production IG brings their A-game when it really counts and matches are amazing. It's like watching a good shonen fight but rather than battle with their fists or weapons, they battle with cross-ups, dunks, and finger rolls. I'm pretty new to the sport genre so it all feels like a very fresh take on things I thought I was getting tired of in anime. There's nothing I can say that I really dislike other than something cheesy like, "I wish there was more of it."

Takashichea: Being a new sport anime fan, I can't think of anything bad about the series. I did recall Whiskers's issues with the art style, the sketched neckshading. There isn't much in the series that bother me at all. We had some fan service for guys and gals, and it wasn't over the top. I definitely recommend this series to Shonen fans who haven't tried any sport themed franchises. This is up your alley.

Revisiting RANMA 1/2 After Too Long

I re-visited the Episode #1 of this - - back when Neon Alley was first offering the series again - - and it was immediately clear why the show had stood the test of time. Like, well enough for folks to get legitimately stoked about its return. The show didn’t waste any time dilly-dallying, it got straight to the hook and, more than anything, it was simply funny.

That last point stands out a lot more when RANMA ½ is placed next to the countless contemporary shows that fumble terribly with this same sort of sexy sitcom shenanigans. Maybe it sounds like faint praise to compliment a show for featuring risqué humor that doesn’t make you want to roll your eyes, but trust me, that means a lot in this particular niche.

== TEASER ==

Now, having just said that, this episode does actually slow things down a little. Ranma adjusting to his new school and living situations - - and all the suitors competing for his fiance’s favor - - is decently wacky, but things definitely don’t feel as manic as they did in Episode #1. It’s almost like the show had to eventually pay its dues. You know, you get to skip to the fun stuff out of the gate, and serve the peach cobbler before dinner, but eventually you've got to eat your brocoli and run through the less-than-exciting stuff.

(I hope I didn’t mix too many metaphors there)

It was fun to see a mob of smitten martial arts masters piling up as they’re literally chasing after a girl - - babbling “I love you!” over and over like its some code brainwashed into them - - but it didn’t quite do it as well for me as Episode #1. Hopefully, things will perk up a little more in #3?

Watch "School is No Place for Horsing Around" and decide for yourself.

DRAGON BALL Redeems Krillin for Me

When I was watching YU YU HAKUSHO, you lunatics liked to harp on how influential the “Dark Tournament” was - - how every following shonen basically ripped it off. I remember thinking that was a weird notion. That was seriously the first show to feature the heroes in a tournament?

Well, maybe it was more about that show’s inexhaustible enthusiam for depicting every single match and every single bracket over an entire arc. Because look at this - - it’s a tournament arc, years before YYH! From the onset though, Toriyama skipping over a lot of reduncies and is focussing almost entirely on the comedic side of the premise. The timing more often reminded me of a LOONY TOONS sketch (with Bugs Bunny happening to use involved martial arts against the Big Red Monster, natch), and I have no hesitation calling it delightful.

== TEASER ==

Last time, I talked about how I never found Master Roshi that interesting or funny until he and I were properly introduced here. That same sentiment goes for Krillin, now. He’s been the butt of every third DRAGON BALL joke for me since I was seven - - pretty much the opening act for any new villain. Want to see how nasty this Big Bad is? Watch him punk Krillin first, every single time, until Goku comes along to save the day.

(To be fair, the same more-or-less went for Yamcha, too).

Goku has already shot way ahead of his rival, but watching these two be plucky partners-in-crime dart their way through various bullies has been unexpectedly fun. A lot of that comes down to the quality of the voice acting, which pulls off the rare feat of making comedy transcend the language barrier. Goku's voice actress may sound wildly inappropriate in DBZ, but she's so good here, that even her karate chops make me snicker.

Oh, and yeah... the same goes for Krillin's voice, too.

Watch "Elimination Round" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

ONE PIECE Ch. 761 Review

What secret does Doflamingo hold over the heads of the Celestial Dragons, and how did Trafalgar Law survive a terminal illness to gain the powers of the Op-Op Fruit? The answers to these and many other questions began sixteen-years ago in the North Blue.

The Good

Try weighing that cost to benefit ratio?
Try weighing that cost to benefit ratio?

Well, after several teases, it's finally begun. I've been wanting to see this origin story for Trafalgar for a while now. If only to get it out of the way. I know that sounds a touch cynical, but the action was only starting to pick up in this extended Dressrosa Arc. The results of these flashbacks can also be mixed. I've enjoyed many of the previous stories, but I'm concerned that this may drag on and effect my enjoyment of the rest of the arc.

What really surprised me was the bombs that were slipped under the radar, regarding the Op-Op Fruit. A lot of fuss is made surrounding the Logia, and Law has done some amazing things with his devil fruit. Yet, who could have imagined the potential this fruit held? I now understand why Doflamingo wanted it so badly. The eternal life aspects aside, just imagine what you could do with the ability to switch personalities. Let's say there's a world leader you wanted controlled for an extended period. Just switch his mind with that of one of your loyal followers. I had never even considered that before. It''s a very good thing old Doffy never got a hold of that power for long.

I already have an idea of how Law went from having a few years to live to being an adult bad-ass. Upon gaining the powers of the Op-Op Fruit, he likely performed surgery on himself to fix whatever the problem was. It was only a few weeks ago we saw him remove the bullets from his own body.

The Bad

I don't care what happened in his past. Nothing justifies this.
I don't care what happened in his past. Nothing justifies this.

Oda is never one to shy away from creating bizarre character traits, and he certainly didn't shy away withCorazon. His perpetual clumsiness is classic slapstick, but the one that involves his brutal child abuse leaves me more than a little uncomfortable. It's one thing to have a villain we're suppose to hate hit kids. This is supposedly a character we as readers are going to sympathize with at some point, given Law's current admiration of him. How is that possible?

Though, as I say that, I'm remembering what Luffy's grandfather made him suffer through. Perhaps that's a double standard.

Verdict 3/5

The action was only stepping into high gear, and now we're taking a few steps back, in a manner of sixteen-years back. There's always potential for really great story telling in the ONE PIECE flashbacks. You always need to come at these with a "wait and see" mentality. I'm just coming out of this chapter more confused with how Oda plans to turn the audience around on Cora when he's beating on children and doesn't even speak. However, I'm open to seeing how the creator accomplishes this. It could very well surprise me.

We're just going to have to wait longer than usual for the outcome. ONE PIECE will be on break next week.

DRAGON BALL #18 + 19 -- Retro Review

It never really hit me until I saw him and Krillin wearing these ill-fitting gangster suits, but Goku might as well be Eric Cartman at this point. Sure, to get specific, the personalities aren’t too alike, but DRAGON BALL feels a hell out of lot like a SOUTH PARK parody of KARATE FANATIC at this point. And Goku very much fits into that lineage of pint-sized trouble-makers that includes Cartman, Bart Simpson, Dennis the Menace, et al.

Seeing the show continue to be like this during its early days makes me a lot more confident in my observation that ONE PIECE is more-or-less what you’d get if SPONGEBOB ran for 800 episodes (and progressively developed its own superhero mythology along the way). The difference is that Toriyama seemingly stumbled into that model, while Oda clearly planned it from the beginning with his SHONEN JUMP editors…

== TEASER ==

Anyway, I never found Master Roshi all that amusing in DBZ, but now that I’ve gotten to spend some proper time with him, I’m getting a lot of amusement out of his sitcom set-up. You know, he has the appearance of being this sage karate master, but he’s actually a bit of a fraud, isn't he? Watching him scramble to think up some new arbitrary goals for Goku to hit after the tyke immediately obliterates his original test of strength was a hoot. It actually skewers the entire notion of martial arts mysticism, doesn't it? Why should anybody listen to this guy? Even if he knows how to smash a rock, or throw a fireball, does that inherently make him wise?

These episodes are the first to finally introduce the Z-Fighters' signature orange gis, but I think they're actually more notable for the Turtle Shell back packs, since that 'weight clothes' get harped on a whole hell of a lot by the time we get to DBZ. Of course, the funny part is that giant shells actually make a bit more sense than Gis that are somehow impossibly lined with weight piping that somehow never seems to show up.

Eesh... watching thee episodes makes me want to run to the gym, right now. I should be training...

Watch "the Turtle Hermit Way" and "the Tournament Begins" and decide for yourself, then read my write-ups on the previous episode here.

A-Long Rant About Why HUNTER X HUNTER Frustrates Me

When Vicers (including Sam) wax rhapsodic about HxH, the praise often seems to center on it simply doing things that other shonen serials generally don’ t do. ..

Would you expect, say, NARUTO to build up the threat of the Chimera Ant King, and consistently ratchet the tension until that big bad’s final showdown with our hero? Well, guess what - - HxH is going to frustrate that expectation. It’ll intentionally side-step into a multi-episode sub-plot where the King plays a board game with this nearly-inconsequential kid with a runny nose, and slow that rising action right on down. Why do that? Well, it illustrates the philosophical conundrum inherent to how this king can slaughter nations with little effort, but somehow can’t win a board game, and so on..

More importantly - - you’d never see Cell or Frieze do that!

== TEASER ==

This episode cements that significantly, and also reaffirms my suspicion that HxH is largely an exercise for TogashI to essentially test the extent he can troll his audience.

But, Tom!” you shout. “This was a touching, character-based episode. Gon finally reconciles with his estranged his father! They learn that they’ve had the same wishes and values this whole time!

Well, sure. It does do that. But it does that by rolling through copious clips taken from the shows’ five odd seasons. And there’s something that’s very hard not to notice when you watch these clips...

Remember the earliest episodes of the show? Remember how the intro used to open with a monologue by this foreboding narrator, warning of all the exotic kaiju roaming out there in the world? Well, it took 147 episodes for this show to actually get around to reflecting that intro. The show’s called HUNTER X HUNTER, and it has devoted an inordinate amount of screen time to our heroes paying their dues to be called hunters, but has actually shown very little of them actually, y’know, hunting.

There’s no problem with Gon and Killua quickly moving beyond that premise, sure, but the clip show really puts a point on how this series never even ran through the paces of that premise. We got an arc about these kids getting certified to be hunters, an arc about them training to be better fighters, an arc about them serving as bodyguards in a mob feud, an arc about them training more in a video game, an arc about them electing officials… and then the mess that ‘Chimera Ant.’ But no actual arc about them hunting kaiju.

It’s like Togashi forgot to actually fulfill the premise he was setting up because he got distracted by others ideas. Or as I see it, he’s reached that level of success where it just tickles him to see how long he can get readers/viewers to stick with a series that doesn’t actual reflect its own title. Again, sure, YU YU HAKUSHO moved beyond any ‘Spirit Detective’ stuff fairly quickly, but at least the first arc still dealt with it.

Maybe you’ll say, “But yeah, that’s such a shonen trope. Everybody knows they’re hunters. Let’s get past that, and go to the more interesting stuff.” But see, when you say that, it frames the show as a counterpoint to the other big shonen show - - one that can only be fully enjoyed in context, and by comparison. And that really distills what’s frustrated me so much about this show.

Togashi all but has Ging wink at the audience when, in so many words, he stresses that it’s about the journey, not the destination. Of course, I agree with that to a point, but when you really break it down, it’s like an ad executive’s slick doublespeak - - hiding how HxH has almost always goes out of its way to be obfuscating about its own plot.

And it’s hard to argue with that when it’s taken this many episodes for the map promised in the original intro to actually show up on the show.

BLEACH Ch. 597 Review

Liltotto gets some payback for Pepe's betrayal, Yhwach slips past the attacks of the Zero Squad, and Ichigo is finally on his way back from where he only recently left.

The Good

Wouldn't it be super interesting to finally learn more about her? Well, too bad.
Wouldn't it be super interesting to finally learn more about her? Well, too bad.

Kubo really doesn't skimp on the visuals. There's great art found throughout and a handful of laughs. You're just not going to get much out of here, because the creator just doesn't want to focus on anything for too long.

The Bad

I was thinking the same thing about Kubo for all this teasing.
I was thinking the same thing about Kubo for all this teasing.

I know there are a lot of people who weren't especially thrilled with some of the more recent events inBLEACH . I was actually enjoying where this was going, and I wanted to see what was coming next. Imagine my disappointment when we switch to the events in the Reiokyu just as Liltotto was about to get sweet revenge on Pepe.

Maybe you all would prefer the series focus on those events, and I wouldn't blame anyone. It's a rather vital part of current events, but we don't even stay there for long either. It's back down to the Soul Societyto see what's happening with Ichigo and pals just as they're jetting off to follow Yhwach. The whole thing lacks any sense of direction, and serves to remind me how BLEACH almost always reads better as a collection.

Verdict 2/5

There are positives to these events, but they all have the same problem. I believe that it's because it's trying to serve too many masters. To paraphrase that classic chestnut, You can't please everyone, so don't try. This issue jumps from scene to scene so often that it's more confusing trying to figure out the point. I think the creator was trying to make people happy by giving us glimpses as to what Yhwach and Ichigo were up to, but the placement of it is just so odd given how the battle with Kurotsuchi and Byakuya was still going on. Every scene ends with a tease, but who knows when we'll get any closure on any of this.

TORIKO is 10X Better in Dub

We gave TORIKO plenty of chances to grab us, and it was never able to shake off the odor of a cartoon-by-committee. The fact that the series ended earlier this year, before it even got to episode #150, more-or-less proved that Toei's golden touch doesn't have a perfect streak. You can't trick people into liking a show, no matter how much material you pump out...

Of course, that's still a lot of material lying around, and it's still got to be used, so FUNi just me a new box set collecting TORIKO Season 1. I felt obligated to comment, but figured the commentary was a foregone conclusion. So I popped episode #13 in at random, and started thinking of new ways to phrase 'cookie-cutter'....

== TEASER ==

Well, surprisingly enough, I ended up liking the episode, and that largely came down to the dubbing team's efforts. I keep saying that 'localization' isn't a bad word, and this pleasantly recalled the days of the YU YU HAKUSHO and DBZ for me - - when dubs had added entertainment in how the voice actors were very much reacting to the absurdity of the show. And humor just fundamentally plays better in your own language.

The cast is clearly having a ton of fun, and the mirth is infectious. When your lead character's as pumped up as the KILLER INSTINCT announcer, it's impossible not to tag along for the delightful absurdity of these heroes wrestling with a giant monster's tongue and fighting to survive in his impossibly-colorful, and impossibly-well-lit, intestine. For once, I could just revel in how dumb the show is.

All the previous critiques about TORIKO's originality still hold, of course, but none of that stopped this from being entertaining; and I suppose that's a very IRON CHEF presentation-of-ingredients challenge fulfillment for FUNi.

Watch "the Ultim ate Backup! Clash, Coco Vs. GT Robot!" and decide for yourself.

ONE PIECE #662 -- Special Review

Trust me, I get that Oda doesn’t give two shits about stuffy rules of logic - - and I’m totally on board with that! However, while I can look at flintlock rifles firing like semi-automatics and laugh at the whimsy, I have a harder time seeing past our rubber hero getting stuck behind bars. Dude’s signature gimmick is shape-shifting, and you’re telling me he can’t squeeze through some bars? Hell, if it was a chickenwire mesh, I’d be less distracted. There is no way he can’t stretch over and save Tra-guy from ‘Mingo!

I say all that, and then I get delighted by the bad guys arriving onto the scene in the S.S. Candyland…

== TEASER ==

It’s time like these that ONE PIECE feels like some manic, stone humor Adult Swim show that also happens to be really sincere about its heroes kicking ass. People say that a lot about the VENTURE BROTHERS but, I don’t know -- this whole series takes that set-up to a far more extreme pole. It’s really like you’re just visiting Oda in his playroom for 20 minutes every week, and just listening as he tears through his toy chest in some breathless, never-ending imaginative tear.

Hell, the toybox analogy is apt again, because I remember the short ‘filler’ arc that introduced Mom and her minions between the end of the ‘Fishman’ arc and the beginning of ‘Punk Hazard.’ That was over a year ago! And it seemed totally random. But it was basically just Oda making these toys, and tossing them aside with the rough idea that he’d be picking them up again later.

(To be honest, though - - I’m pretty baffled that Caesar Clown’s still around. Dude was defeated over a year ago! The Strawhats haven’t locked him? ‘Mingo hasn’t caught up with him yet? Madness!)

Watch "Two Great Rivals Meet Each Other! Straw Hat and Heavenly Demon!" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

Annotated Tokusatsu: Garo: Makai no Hana episodes 19-23

It looks like Garo: Makai no Hana is on a roll again. As the show begins its final arc, Amemiya and his crew have managed to remain on a solid winning streak for five episodes. Come to think of it, it wasn’t too hard for Garo: Makai no Hana to impress us, as there were a some great bits of comedy and serious moments present in these segments.

Annotated Manga: Bleach chapter 596-597

The continuing freak-off that is the Vandenreich army persists in the latest installments of Bleach, as if we weren't yet sure who the good guys were in this fight.

Of course, being not-a-freak has never been an especially telling sign of moral superiority in this series, what with freak-in-chief Kurotsuchi being one of Soul Society's top people. And yet one can't shake the feeling that every new Sternritter revealed is another underline in the mission statement: "These Quincy guys are EVIL! Can't trust 'em!"
