Revisiting RANMA 1/2 After Too Long

I re-visited the Episode #1 of this - - back when Neon Alley was first offering the series again - - and it was immediately clear why the show had stood the test of time. Like, well enough for folks to get legitimately stoked about its return. The show didn’t waste any time dilly-dallying, it got straight to the hook and, more than anything, it was simply funny.

That last point stands out a lot more when RANMA ½ is placed next to the countless contemporary shows that fumble terribly with this same sort of sexy sitcom shenanigans. Maybe it sounds like faint praise to compliment a show for featuring risqué humor that doesn’t make you want to roll your eyes, but trust me, that means a lot in this particular niche.

Now, having just said that, this episode does actually slow things down a little. Ranma adjusting to his new school and living situations - - and all the suitors competing for his fiance’s favor - - is decently wacky, but things definitely don’t feel as manic as they did in Episode #1. It’s almost like the show had to eventually pay its dues. You know, you get to skip to the fun stuff out of the gate, and serve the peach cobbler before dinner, but eventually you've got to eat your brocoli and run through the less-than-exciting stuff.

(I hope I didn’t mix too many metaphors there)

It was fun to see a mob of smitten martial arts masters piling up as they’re literally chasing after a girl - - babbling “I love you!” over and over like its some code brainwashed into them - - but it didn’t quite do it as well for me as Episode #1. Hopefully, things will perk up a little more in #3?

Watch "School is No Place for Horsing Around" and decide for yourself.
