While western superhero comics (known as "Ame-comi" in Glorious Nippon) don't usually fall under Japanator's purview, there's no denying that the influence of anime and manga can reach far and wide. That's exactly what's happening in the latest issue of Marvel Comics' Spider-Man franchise.
Edge of Spider-verse , a special series leading up to the web-slinger's latest crossover event, has been exploring the lives of alternate versions of Spider-Man. The different stories have followed African-American Spider-Men, evil Spider-Men, female Spider-Men, and in the fifth issue, written by Gerard Way and illustrated by James Wyatt, the multiverse turns its eye on the saga of "Peni Parker", pilot of the symbiotic SP//dr mecha-suit. The story itself draws from classic tokusatsu hero shows for inspiration, but is also rife with various anime and manga references in the art, including cameos from Ghost in the Shell, Evangelion, Dirty Pair, and Akira.
