NARUTO Ch. 695 Review

This is the battle to finally end their life-long rivalry, but one of them isn't taking it as seriously as he should.

The Good

The story may have lost me, but this chapter at least delivers some really cool visuals in this action. The battle may feel like a repeat, but at least the scale of these giant energy creatures gives them some added spice. It's the same sort of joy you get out of watching a GODZILLA movie. You wait the whole bloody film for the kaiju smack down. The fun is in just letting go and reveling in baser instincts of destruction for a little while. It really sucks when you get distracted from the devastation for one reason or another. In that sense, I really think Kishimoto is doing this fight a disservice by taking time away from this battle of monsters to rehash the tired old theme of childhood friend/enemy.

The Bad

I was initially confused why Sasuke is proving to be such a challenge for Naruto in this current fight. I understand that he had a power boost from the Sage of Six Paths, but Naruto now holds the power of all nine of the Biju. Not to mention his experience fighting multiple enemies with two Rinnegan. That got cleared up as Sasuke announces that Naruto is only playing defense. However, now I just see Naruto as being reckless with the fate of humanity. I understand that he can't risk killing Sasuke at this point, but that doesn't mean he should be risking drawing things out any further than they have. He doesn't need his legs to be working to form a seal.

My biggest disappointment out of this chapter is the cut away from the action to once again watch these scenes of Naruto and Sasuke as kids. Does the creator think we could have forgotten this, or is he just stumbling in an effort to over dramatize?

Verdict 3/5

This final battle between Naruto and Sasuke doesn't need any more drama added to it. It's what the series has building to for years. While I did love many of these images when they first appeared - nine years ago, I now find them dated and useless for the conflict that's currently taking place. This series will be closing in five weeks. My message to Kishimoto is to set aside rehashing old themes you've repeated every time they've clashed. Let them fight. **My best Ken Watanabe impression**
