My Gateway Anime: RONIN WARRIORS

It was a lazy summer vacation. I was 10 or maybe 11, and had spent the last several hours watching television not because anything good was on, but because gosh darn it it was summer and I could do what I wanted!

Suddenly, out of nowhere, something new came on. Something the likes of which I had never seen before, which seemed to resonate deep within my soul; satisfying a need I never even new I had. That show was RONIN WARRIORS.

It was like nothing I’d ever seen before! The art style, the armors, the Japanese folklore and iconographic motif… Everything was so new and different!

It was absolutely the coolest thing I had ever seen. I was forever changed.

I watched every episode of the show that week, but the encroaching doom of summer day camp was looming. As much as I wanted to go to camp, I knew it would prevent me from watching RONIN WARRIORS! What was I to do?

You learn how to program your VCR, that’s what! And so I did, and was able to finish out the series.

Do I remember anything about the show? …Not really. The theme song is the only aspect that really sticks out in my mind, aside from some really cool sequences of the various armors fighting. But RONIN WARRIORS was my gateway anime nonetheless. It opened up a whole new world to me that I didn’t even know existed, and after that I sought out anything remotely like it.

Next came DRAGONBALL, and SAILOR MOON, and then DRAGONBALL Z for a time. They were all enrapturing, but nothing was as shockingly awesome as RONIN WARRIORS.

So what was YOUR gateway anime? We’d like to hear about what got you started, old school or no. Leave a comment in the talkbalk below!
