Right when I thought that Animator Expo was only dedicated to showcasing original anime shorts, the project's fifth piece ended up being a tribute to Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (Gundam's Character Designer and Animation Director) and Ichiro Itano's (Worked on Gundam's In-Between Animations) involvement with the original Gundam series. Either way, the short is a nice treat for anyone who loves to see the production work that went into creating the classic mecha series, as we're treated to a side-by-side segment that places the show's animation scenes next to the anime's storyboards and animatic sequences.
Since I adored the original series, it was great to see the anime's pencil drawings on screen. Combined with the most of the show's signature tracks, Animator Expo's Gundam tribute piece managed to take us down a good trip through memory lane. If there was one minor issue, it's that we didn't get to see the storyboards behind the legendary Bright Slap. Oh well.
Seeing that the we've been treated to a new format this week, I wouldn't be surprised if they did some more tribute pieces down the road as well. One thing for sure, I interest in this project have gone up once again.
