BLEACH Ch. 607 Review

Yhwach, the Quincy emperor, will finally realize his own mortality as he's forced to clash with Ichibe, the commander of the Reiokyu's Zero Squad.

The Good

Yhwach just can't catch a break with this guy.
Yhwach just can't catch a break with this guy.

You know, if someone was unfortunate enough to be coming into BLEACH for the first time with this particular battle. I honestly believe that they'd have a difficult time discerning who's the good guy in this situation. I bring this up, because Ichibe reeeeally seems to be enjoying himself as he knocks Yhwach down a few pegs with every encounter. The look in his eyes is almost terrifying.

With every move Yhwach attempts to turn the tables in his favor. Ichibe just counters it with relative ease. In a weird way, I really enjoy that. As I said last week, Kubo more often makes his villains next to untouchable. That was one of the biggest reason's that Aizen just bored me through most of the series. That's partly why I find this so exciting. Yhwach is certainly formidable, but Ichibe just seems more experienced.

Also last week, I questioned what Ichibe's contribution was to the Soul Society. After watching him work here, I wonder if he was the creator of Kido? That would certainly explain a lot.

The Bad

I don't really have any problem with the give and take nature of this battle. This shows us the impressive level of power the Quincy emperor holds. He's just up against someone who appears to be an equal match. Sure, we all know that Yhwach will come out of this as the victor at some point, but it's left me wondering. Is Ichigo up to this same level when he arrives? Kido appears to be Yhwach's weakness, and that's never been out hero's strong suit.

Verdict 3/5

I actually feel like a bit of a doofus for not realizing that Ichibe's giant brush could be his zanpakuto. It looks pretty awesome, and I can't wait to see how it's used next week. Part of the reason I'm enjoying this as much as I am is largely due to the anticipation each subsequent chapter leaves me with. Sure, this battle may be going on for a lot longer than I had anticipated, but it's also not bothering me that my expectation of a Vandenreich steamrolling hasn't come to pass. I'm much happier to be surprised by my reading experiences than seeing everything following a repeating pattern.
