All respect to Tezuka, but it's hard to look at Astro Boy with a critical eye and not think that his era may has passed. Certainly, you can point to plenty of successful heroes who've followed him - - Mega Man being the most notable, perhaps - - but you could've done the same for John Carter of Mars. The successors all added something to the archetype that put them more in steps with the times.
Nevertheless, THR is reporting that special effects and animation Animal Logic is trying to put together a live-action feature film starring the character. The plan is to make a movie that will appeal to broader audiences, toughening the character a little to make his new adventure more along the lines of the IRON MAN movies.

Given how severely the animated ASTRO BOY movie under-performed six years ago, you have to figure that this take will need to reinterpret the character significantly to make him appealing to modern audiences. The image of a boy with metal-hard bedhead, in swimming trunks, flying around with a cannon that pops out of his butt... can't really work in the 2010's.The producers would probably be better served by taking more notes from the toned-down Atom who appeared in PLUTO, instead of the over-the-top adventurer who starred in the comic and cartoon.
Are any of you Vicers excited about this? Do you think it has any chance for success? More importantly, if you sat down in the fantasy producer's chair, how would you revamp Astro Boy to make him work better in live action?
