OK, so it's not actually live-action, but the animation's still rather convincingly photo-real...
SOLA Digital Arts, the animation house behind APPLESEED ALPHA among others, has put together this demo - - presumably in hopes of convincing Gainax to grant them the license to make a series-length version?
It's a pretty short, certainly, but I'd say the EVA Rebuilds have already shown how you lose a lot of what's appealing about this story whenever you attempt to distill it into neat, shorter features. When a series is so beloved for its complexity, it's rather counter-intuitive to be putting out a simpler version of it, no?

Besides, we've already basically seen the live-action EVA movie, and it was called PACIFIC RIM. If WETA ever went ahead with the adaptation that's been languishing in development hell for years, believe me, that's what'd you'd get after all the development notes needed to get $100-200 million budget were addressed. Rei would be combined with Asuka. The EVAs-as-mothers angle would be dropped. And so on, and so on.
That said, the success of the rebuilds and the unveiling of the EVA theme park rides have all demonstrated that this series isn't ending any time soon. The real question is, what will the next iteration of EVA be after the fourth rebuild bows? Will we see another remake? Would it be cool to see a spin-off series animated in this style? Let us know what you'd like to see in the talkback.
