We're sampling all the new pilots this Winter. Check out our thoughts on...
- JOJO'S - BATTLE IN EGYPT ** ASSASSINATION CLASSROOM ** DEATH PARADE
- MARIA THE VIRGIN WITCH ** YATTERMAN NIGHT ** THE ROLLING GIRLS
- THE TESTAMENT OF SISTER NEW DEVIL ** THE IDOLM@STER ** KANTAI COLLECTION
- ABSOLUTE DUO ** YURI KUMA ARASHI ** UNLIMITED FAFNIR ** WORLD BREAK
- CUTE HIGH EARTH DEFENSE CLUB LOVE ** SAMURAI WARRIORS ** ISUCA
Has anybody ever actually enjoyed one of these micro series? I feel like there was one that was good, but its name alludes me underneath the pile of ones that were just blatantly bad (and that probably says a lot about the effectiveness of this format).

Honestly, I'm starting to think these things might be criticism-proof, albeit for different reasons than slice-of-life. Even at their best, there's only so much you can do well in five minutes or under, so whenever you start enjoying one it's -- BLIP! -- roll credits and wait another week. We throw the term "filler" around so often, but this kind of thing is the true definition of it. Content created just to fill gaps in longer shows' programming slots. Content that can only ever be so good, and is more often just awful.
It really just feels like I'm critiquing a book of stickers, or a bag of keychain charms. After watching CHAIKA, I'm still convinced that cute girls waving around extensively-detailed assault weapons is the latest strange trend in anime (so you can retire your over-sized sword), but that's all I got out of watching these sort-of sitcom shenanigans.
This is based on some figurine line, right? It has to be. Let me know if I'm missing something in the talkback.
Watch this pilot and decide for yourself.
