Sweet! Boomslank's "Zero Frame" and "Ronin" shirts get reprinted

Listen up, people; our pals at Boomslank have decided to reprint two shirts recently. In case you missed out on purchasing their "Zero Frame" and/or "Ronin" shirt, the two apparels have returned to their store. Best of all, the former has undergone a fancy new change, which'll please anyone who's interested in owning the group's mecha-themed shirt.

Compare to the group's previous "Zero Frame" shirt, the robot gets a new upgrade and the pilot's comrades decide to check out the awesome mech. All in all, the addition of the extra characters help make the design even better than before. Also, the extra detail to the machine contribute to the Second Generation's sexiness.

If you're interested in purchasing the two shirts by Ai-Fi's creators, you can get them at Boomslank's Website. Since I'm a fan of both robots and samurais, I might have to grab both designer shirts while they're still hot.

New My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Zoku CM is here with more sour-faced looks

The commercial for the second season of My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU is here and boy, the ever anti-social unlikable main protagonist Hachiman looks as anti-social as ever. Looks like there's a new female lead character in this new season named Kaori Isshiki to be voiced by Ayane Sakura (Natsumi in Non Non Biyori, Shimakaze in KanColle).

The new season will air on April 2nd, 2015 in Japan and I can't wait to see more of the cynicism and harem antic, two things that I kind of like together. I'm weird, okay?

Week Ender - PA Works Edition

PA Works is a studio that has had great success as of late with their original anime Shirobako. That wasn't the case with their previous works since their last hit, Hanasaku Iroha but they've been hitting it out of the park with their latest anime about an anime studio who has been trying to make their comeback. Who knew that them making an anime about making anime and themselves would be so successful?

Well, this weekend's Week Ender is about PA Works and they've got some good endings in there. Well, I have a couple that I really like so I'll just throw those in with some others. Enjoy!

Check out Animator Expo's adorable ghost short

If you had a rough day today. then Animator Expo's 15th short might be the thing to lift your spirits. Not only that, Shigeto Koyama's (Diebuster's Mechanical Designs) Obake-chan piece takes the concepts of ghosts and changes it from scary to cute. Instead the animation using the eight-minute time frame to tell a whole story, we're treated to a series of skits that sets up for some small laughs.

Besides the cute jokes, Obake-chan's other strength is how the team utilizes a very simplistic layout for the animation. The light brown background feels like it was done on light brown paper and the character's white lines help compliment the piece's ghost theme. Of course, the unexpected surprise at the end was priceless as well.

Now that we've passed the halfway point in the Japan Animator Expo project, the next 15 shorts are certain to bring joy to our lives during the Spring 2015 Anime Season. Then we can look forward to a relaxing summer in the next few months.

Omega Quintet's latest English trailer has dancing idols

Alright, people; Spring's around the corner and it's time to look at Idea Factory International's most recent trailer for Omega Quintet, Compile Heart's PS4 title where you battle the forces of evil with an idol group. While the video looks like a normal idol performance at first sight, we're actually witnessing the game's PVS (short for Promotional Video System) feature, which lets you customize your own idol music videos.

Other than that, a new batch of screenshots for the game have entered the stage as well. Unlike Omega Quintet's latest English video, we get to see the idols go up against some fearsome adversaries. Based on what we've seen so far, I like the idea that your team is made up of five character, since many modern RPG titles mostly focus on parties of three or four characters. This might be just me, but the idol group's colors give me a Momoiro Clover Z vibe, since they also wear color-coded outfits. If anything, I might hop on the action when I finally get a PS4.

In case you haven't been keeping tabs on Omega Quintet, the game hits North America both physically and digitally on April 28. Europe'll get their share of the physical idol action on May 1, with a digital release hitting the region on May 6. In other words, the two areas'll get to play it within the same week-- good job, Idea Factory International. Once you're done with watching the trailer, you can take a peak at the vidya gaem's screenshots in the gallery below.

Anime Vice Transforms

Anime Vice begins a new transformation today...

We're shifting focus to our YouTube channel. With the help of our comrades at the CineFix network, I'll be writing, producing and hosting a weekly schedule of anime-themed videos going forward. I'm so stoked to work with such a creative crew of professional camera people, editors, voice actors and producers. That rad AKIRA - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? video I did with Casey and Michael today is my first collaboration with these folks, and I can't wait to show you Vicers what we're cooking up next.

If you've enjoyed what we've gotten to do in 300 odd episodes of the Vice Pit over the years then, trust me, we're seriously leveling up today - - jumping straight to Super Saiyan.

Unfortunately, the site itself will be discontinuing.

While AnimeVice.com will go dark on April 8th, the Anime Vice community will continue to live on. I've already been working with our mods to transfer wiki entries over to AnimeVice.wikia.com. You've all done such great work here. I'm hoping we can preserve as much of it as we can. Thankfully, we'll be getting a couple weeks to do so.

The mods and I are also discussing options for other places to continue the blogs and boards. Anime Vice's Facebook and Twitter (as well as the Anime Vicers fan Twitter ) will be much more active, now, so please subscribe for community updates. We're going to continue spotlighting the Vicers in these new videos, and we'll actually be able to give back to you guys directly, too. Yes, we're talking about some very spiffy contests and giveaways. Stay tuned.

Today's PARASYTE write-up is my last for the site. I didn't plan for WATCH & LEARN to end so cleanly with that series' final episode. It's honestly a coincidence - - one of several hovering around this transformation.

If you've been paying attention, you've hopefully noticed that I've been writing comics and cartoons throughout my time here. As my career in those areas has picked up, it's become much harder to balance that writing with my writing here. I actually just started working on a new animated series this month. And before I met with the CineFix team, it was looking like I'd have to step away from Anime Vice entirely as a result.

My time as the Shogun here has always felt like an epic masters program in storytelling. Day in, day out, I've picked these shows apart. I've noted what worked, and what didn't. I've theorized on why an anime's quality ever swung one or the other. And most importantly, I've compared my findings with the expert reactions you've all offered up for every title, in every post. It's been absolutely invaluable. Whatever stories I write going forward will be shaped by what I've learned here. From all this anime and manga. From you.

I looked forward to applying these lessons to my own books and shows. Now, I'm doubly excited: because I'll be getting to do that while I continue making cool content for Anime Vice. With the CineFix team, I have more time to make bigger videos.

So, one epic Anime Vice arc concludes while another arc begins. I've been the Shogun for three years, now. And I've been blogging and vloging for the site since two years before that. It's been a fantastic opportunity, watching anime and then writing or talking about it almost every day.

There are so many people I want to thank...

The users who've kept commenting on posts, talking in the forums, writing blogs, adding to the wiki and, best of all, celebrating each other's contributions. We've always such a real, positive and supportive community.

The writers I've gotten to work with. Each one brought sharp perspective, and gave an eclectic variety of voices to the site. They've made my experience as an editor so fun.

My regular and semi-regular co-hosts on the Vice Pit. Jawing on that show has been my favorite part of this job, and I've been lucky to have pals ready and able to go off on any wild tangent with me.

And, of course, the staff who built the site and trusted me to run it for all this time.

While this isn't the end of Anime Vice, I want these final days of AnimeVice.com to be a celebration of the people who matter most here - - you. The users. The mods. The Vicers. The Lunatics. This community is truly what's made Anime Vice special, and I'll be paying tribute to you guys in my own special way before we sign off. Stay tuned.

It's going to take us a little while to get this new machine rolling. While we hash out our plans for new videos, I'd love it if you Vicers could fill the talkback below with suggestions.

Check out the old episodes of the Vice Pit – are there any topics or segments you'd like us to revist?

Sample the great content at CineFix – do any formats there seem like they'd work for anime? Which titles?

Let us know. Let us know. Let us know. We're listening. We're open to ideas. I'm only ever as far as Tumblr and Twitter. And we're eager to involve you as much as we can in the next step of this transformation.

That's allI I've got to say for now. I'm honored that you've let me be your Shogun for all these years.

And I hope you'll level up with me.

Rawr: TyranoBuilder lets you make your own visual novels

I may be prehistorically late to the festivities, but there's something intriguing about Nyu Media's collaboration with STRIKEWORKS. Thanks to their cooperation, TyranoBuilder , a user-friendly program that lets you create your own visual novel titles, hits Steam on Mar. 27, which happens to be this Friday.

In accordance to Nyu Media and the adorable girl in a T-Rex costume, TyranoBuilder features an easy interface, since you don't have to worry about programming things into your game. However, if you're interested in going the extra mile with your creations, the title lets you do full scripting. Once you complete your project, you're given the option to release it for the PC, MAC, iOS, Android, HTML5, and CSS3; thus giving people the chance to check out your work.

Based on what Nyu Media's description of the product, TyranoBuilder sounds like a neat tool for anyone who wants to awaken their inner visual novel. Hopefully, players'll get to use the title's mascot in their creations, since she deserves her own story. For the price of $14.99, it looks like we're in for a sweet deal.

If things go according to plan, this could give us the chance to make a Modern Method-themed visual novel with Mr. Destructoid, Ai-Fi, Tomopop's beedog, and Flixist as the title's stars. For the record, this is just a random idea that I came with during the creation of this post.

Show by Rock!! trailer shows off the rockin' cuteness

Airing this spring season is an anime adaptation of the mobile rhythm music game Show by Rock!!., which is a surprising collaboration of the Sanrio (the Hello Kitty people) and mobile game publisher/developer Greechs.

The story of this one is about a girl who gets sucked into the titular game's world where she becomes part of a band and strives to become the best in the land. An interesting property from the people behind it and it is stated to target adult males. Sanrio really wants that target demographic. Check it out for yourself if it becomes successful as it airs on Japanese TV on April 5, 2015.

Week Ender - SEED Edition

I have spoken to many anime fans and it seems that Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny elicits a very mixed reaction. There are those who absolutely love it and those who think it's the worse thing ever. I sit in the middle of those two viewpoints, while I love the mecha and the more updated reimagining of the original Gundam elements in SEED, I do dislike certain elements in the show.

I think the best part of the show is the soundtrack and many people seem to agree, there are plenty of really great openings and endings in the Gundam SEED series. Now I present some of those endings for this weekend's edition of Week Ender.

Review: Naruto: The Last

Naruto is a name known throughout the anime and manga world that stands alongside shounen action staples such as Dragon Ball and Bleach. Masashi Kishimoto’s orange-clad ninja has been around since 1999 and has grown up with a generation or two of anime and manga fans, with the manga concluding last November in Japan. The last manga chapter of Naruto offered up a glimpse into a decade into the future, introducing new characters as well as showing old friends all grown up.

Welcome, Anime Vice Community! Tom and Mat point out in a very special Vice Pit why you should be glad you've never heard of BRAIN POWERED , then the announcement came this week that the CG HARLOCK: SPACE PIRATE would have an English dub. You should check out Tom's article to see the trailer. I'm pretty sure I've already seen this on Netflix, with the Japanese dialog. My reaction was that it was really pretty, but the story was so-so. Such a strange end.

BLEACH Ch. 619 Review

Has Yhwach been controlling Ichigo Kurosaki his entire life, or is this just some trick to throw off our hero's determination?

The Good

It's really unfortunate that all the positives in the art and action for this chapter had to be ruin by the dialog.

The Bad

No, that's him being in character.
No, that's him being in character.

Just how many times is Kubo intending on pulling the grand puppet master card in a single series? Well, I guess not that many times. Given this is the final arc. Back when Aizen tried claiming that everything happened according to his will, I rolled my eyes, but at least he had some semi-plausible logic behind his boasting. Yhwach now saying that EVERYTHING Ichigo has done was for his benefit is beyond ridiculous. It makes me think of a child, who's losing at a game, and claims that they meant to do that.

I could accept that Ichigo grabbing Yhwach's sword could have some sway over his actions. That was a direct physical contact taking over the Quincy blood of someone caught off guard. However, the best evidence Yhwach pulls out to back up his words is that Ichigo uses the word "stop" in place of "kill". It would be an entirely different matter if Ichigo had been the sort of character who was out to kill everyone in his way, but that's never been his motivation. I can only recall a single moment when Ichigo even contemplated killing, and that was back in the Fullbring Arc. That was when Shukuro messed with the memories of this friends and family. Driving this perpetual protector to the point of even considering killing was one of my favorite points of that whole arc.

To top all of this off, we end with the appearance of Uryu -- one of my least favorite aspect of the arc. There has only been one time this series he's ever been considered even a second-level threat, but now I'm suppose to believe he could get the drop on Yoruichi and destroy her barrier -- that was erected to hold back Yhwach.

Verdict 1/5

Kubo has to stretch so far to make the claim that Yhwach has some deep seeded control over Ichigo that he given me the impression that he's forgotten how he's written his protagonist up to this point. Maybe - maybe - this is an issue of something being lost in translation, but I pretty much doubt it. It also doesn't help that this has to end with Uryu stealing the show from out of nowhere. I'm starting to get some really bad late-NARUTO vibes on where this is starting to head. I'm really hoping that Kubo hasn't jumped the shark here and gets things back on track.

PARASYTE - THE MAXIM #23 -- The Dumbest Episode

Oh, kiss my ass. What a bunch of hokum. Give me those wasted 22 minutes back. Please.

My suspicion that we were in store for another pointless non-ending was on the money. There's no way the show can right itself, now. It's too late. And I can't be frustrated, because I've known this was coming for a long time. Maybe I should I be grateful that Shinchi at least killed Goto during their final duel?

Although, wait... he didn't, did he? Oh, shit.

== TEASER ==

Please don't be fooled. Shinichi doesn't say anything profound, nor coherent, during his ramble over Goto's semi-dead body. The crew is attempting to make big, important points about life, and instinct, and the universe, or whatever, of course. But his blather has all the clarity of “deep thoughts” mumbled by some kid who just took a long, deep huff off a shit-brown Crayola marker. And it has all the reaching, tenuous pretension (and incoherence) of the concluding paragraph in a second grade book report.

If you're having a heated message board argument, and you need some textbook demonstration of inauthentic, forced characterization - - a Platonic ideal of such bad writing, as it were - - you needn't look any farther than this episode.

It makes no sense that Shinichi would spare Goto, at any stage of this fight...

It is not character growth that makes him listlessly shrug this threat off...

It is not believable that he'd entertain the thought of letting Goto murder more humans...

…unless he's meant to be understood as high in this scene. Whatever he learned over 22 episodes, he forgot, because he voluntarily killed his own brain cells.

Watching this on a streaming service like CrunchyRoll makes me wish I'd seen it on some hard copy instead. I want a more physical way to express my distaste. I want to snap a DVD disc in half, crumple the packaging into a ball and just slam it all into the nearest trash bin. It's that stupid.

Watch this episode and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.

OP Up! Green Edition

Yesterday was Saint Patrick's Day, a day that people in the US use as an excuse to pinch others not wearing green, wear green, and get drunk in the middle of the day. I am writing in this in the past so why not use this as a theme? Not the drinking part, I'm referring to the "green" part.

So this week's contrived theme is about "green", well it's mostly anime with green haired characters. Oh and a song by the band Greeeen sung with awkwardly translated english lyrics by Hugh Jackman, though I don't think the lyrics are his fault. Enjoy!

Awful Anime -- BRAIN POWERED

from Anime Vice Site Mashup http://ift.tt/1Ct58To

Wonder why Korean and Japanese students can't speak English?

The guys over at RocketNews24 posted a pretty interesting video, where they interviewed some Japanese and Korean students about why they had difficulty speaking English, even though they had studied the language for a long time in school. I think this is kind of true for anyone learning a foreign language, but it's very true at least in Japan. While it's a bit of a generalization, there's some interesting arguments brought up.

HARLOCK -- Most Expensive Anime Ever?

The Captain's finally docking on America shores. Years after our eyeballs exploded over those pretty, pretty international trailers, an English-dubbed edition of HARLOCK: SPACE PIRATE will be screening here for very limited engagements at the end of this month. According to ANN, if you're in LA, NY or San Francisco, you'll basically have two days to catch the flick on the big screen, in 3D.

Presumably the home video release will swiftly follow. Netflix is already streaming sub-titled versions.

== TEASER ==

I continue to be impressed by the state-of-the-art digital animation here, of course, but I also continue to be confused by a number of details. For one, Toei is boasting that HARLOCK is their most expensive project to date, with a budget around $30 million USD. Considering that STEAMBOY was the last movie to claim the title of “Most Expensive Anime Ever,” and it only clocked in at $20 million, doesn't that presumably make this the current outlier?

You'd figure that Ketchup Entertainment would throw that fact around; it's just as impressive as James Cameron's glowing pull quotes. However, if you try to do some digging on this online, the rankings of anime feature budgets aren't nearly as available as live-action movies. Maybe this continues the anime tradition of under-reporting budgets that Tezuka set in the 50's, because HARLOCK certainly looks like it stretched every one of its pretty pennies.

Toei's decision not to revamp any of the designs is questionable, as well. Considering how GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY was such a runaway, global success last year, there's clearly an ample appetite for movies updating 70's space opera. A lot of potential for crossover here seems to have been unnecessarily limited by the insistence on keeping Harlock's old hairdo, swashbuckler duds and... ah... steering wheel that literally makes his ship a boat in outer space.

Mobile Suite Gundam: The Origin II is up to bat

I have to admit that I wasn't blown away with the first Origin OVA. I think I might have buult the whole thing up in my head a bit too much, and was hoping for some more juicy Char history. There's something about the style of the trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin II - Artesia's Sorrow that makes me want to come back for more though! It feels moodier and just as gorgeous.

I guess anytime a trailer has singing along with fighting in it I get pretty charged up. You can't say I'm not easy to please! I can't say I love the narrater for the trailer though. Chill out a bit dude.

A Daily Dose of Music: Momoiro Clover Z

I didn't see this one coming at all! In stark contrast to their latest collaboration with American rockers Kiss, Momoiro Clover Z come back with the new ballad, Seishunfu. The perfect song for the upcoming Spring season, it's sweet and sappy, as well as darn cute. The track is the theme to their upcoming movie Maku ga Agaru.

I love hearing each girl flex their always improving vocals chops, but the song could really stood on its own without the choir back-up. It just sounds very unnecessary and cheeses the otherwise fantastic song up too much. I wonder if there is a choir free version out there?

Saint Seiya returns next month

Get your polish ready! Toei's Saint Seiya is set to return to the airwaves next month, and you're going to want your armor looking spiffy. The show will be available via a stream on Bandai's channel globally, so many fans of the old school series are going to be in luck.

I'm digging the character designs, and the whole thing looks like a lot of fun. Make sure to tune in to Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold on April 11th. If this trailer doesn't get Seiya fans pumped, you need to check your bling at the door!

Celebrate Pi day with a minute and half of pai

Today happened to be "Pi Day" where today's date in the USA being 3-14-15, which is exactly the same as the number Pi being 3.1415. Many people have used today's celebration of the irrational number to promote math and as a great excuse for the vast amount of consumption of pie.

So how do anime lovers get in on today's celebration? Well, two of my favorite female characters (Waifus), Kuriyama Mirai from Beyond the Boundary and Yukina Himeragi from Strike the Blood, happen to say "Senpai" a lot in their shows. Youtuber Shennpai cuts together pretty much all the instances from their shows when they say the "-pai" parts from the word "Senpai" and the most glorious minute-and-half video happens.

Check it out above. Excuse me while I catch my breath from too much HNNNNNNNG.

I'm just glad it's not oppai, because forget that noise.

Week Ender - Kenshin Edition

I'm sure plenty of y'all out there grew up with the very popular Samurai X and saw it as it aired on Toonami in the late 90's in the US. In 2012, Rurouni Kenshin got a live action film adaptation and got two sequels in 2014.

Last weekend, I got to watch the entirety of the live action Rurouni Kenshin film trilogy and it was great. That got me reminiscing about the anime adaption's many great ending songs. So to cap off this week, here is a few of the many endings of the Samurai X.

Community Spotlight -- 3/13/2015

Welcome, Anime Vice Community! Tom and Sam asked the question if PARASYTE jumped the shark at some point in a special Vice Pit, and the direction of the series doesn't seem to be going well for our esteemed otaku commander. If you have a way with your words and the singing voice to back it up, Richie Branson, the otaku king, may have a spot for you in his posse. All of those articles can be found in the News section.

Just how many Friday 13ths are we going to have this year. We're only three months into 2015, and we've already had two in a row. That can't bode well.

BLEACH Ch. 618 Review

To confront the devil Yhwach, Captain Shunsui offers a deal with the devil everyone in the Soul Society both knows and fears.

The Good

Would you like to play a game?
Would you like to play a game?

Okay, I'm so pleased to see that Shunsui didn't go into this negotiation with Aizen waving all the keys in front of him without any level of precaution. I do have to say, hiding the remaining keys into his own chest is rather extreme. Although, it's justified when dealing with a man who can so easily manipulate your perception. Jigsaw would be proud of that move.

I also have to applaud the heroes up in the Reiokyu for finally starting to take some action. They've been standing around for too long just letting Yhwach have his way.

The Bad

I find it incredible hard to believe that these guards are stupid enough to just leap into the danger zone so carelessly. This is your BLEACH equivalent of a red shirt. Some moron who puts himself in danger as a plot device to showcase some danger for the sake of the audience. Sure, this could have been explained in the dialog, but isn't it far more entertaining to actually see this effect in action?

Verdict 3/5

This is largely a descent chapter, but the lack of forward momentum is what holds it back from being anything special. You're getting some nice story and a taste of action. Here's hoping that this means the Reiokyu side of the story will start picking up. The discrepancy between both fronts of the story as far as pacing goes has really been taking its toll in recent weeks.

Beat Down Boogie shows off PAX East '15's cosplays and games

For a good while, I've been interested in attending one of the PAX conventions. Unfortunately, there were a few life-related events that prevented me from traveling to these events. Once again, Beat Down Boogie does another video that showcases the festivity's cosplayers, except that their latest segment covers some of the event's video games as well.

While PAX East is mostly themed around video games, it was cool to see a Ryuko and a Female Titan cosplay in the video. Of course, there's always something fascinating about seeing people create their own special take on existing characters, such as the Military Mario and Peach cosplayers.

Thanks to Beat Down Boogie's hard work in capturing every cosplayer at PAX East 2015, my desire to go to one of the Penny Arcade Expos has gone up. But first, I'll need to plan out my journey before I get too excited.

ONE PIECE Ch. 779 Review

Bellamy, you poor, deluded fool.
Bellamy, you poor, deluded fool.

Can Luffy throw a punch at a man he calls a friend? He'll have to make a hard choice, if he wants to reach Doflamingo and save the people of Dressrosa.

The Good

I never imagined this would be so hard to witness.
I never imagined this would be so hard to witness.

At the risk of repeating myself, I had been vocal about my desire to see history repeat itself between Luffy and Bellamy once he reappeared in the early chapters of the Dressrosa Arc -- not to mention looking a lot like Rowdy Roddy Piper. Go look up Luffy's best punches on You Tube, and the strike on Jaya is always on the list. Such a one-sided victory against that arrogant jerk always seemed to scratch that sadistic itch.

Fast forward several years, and now I find myself ashamed that I ever wanted this to happen. It makes me wonder if Oda is the real sadist here. He knew people would be calling for another smack down when Bellamy popped back up. Little did any of us know that he'd make us regret that desire by tricking us into liking the rowdy pirate first.

My greatest regret is in not owning the Skypiea Arc volumes. I'd love to see how this week's chapter compares to the original compositions, from the punch and the panels leading up to it. It all looks so familiar.

The Bad

Is pride really a great reason for taking such a beating?
Is pride really a great reason for taking such a beating?

The only real fault I can find with this situation is in Bellamy's flawed reasoning for continuing his fight with Luffy. I just can't decide if Bellamy's knowledge that his actions don't make sense makes it any better or worse. Some will call it the determination of a man, and others will call it the rationale of a deluded moron. It all depends on who you ask, and they're both probably correct.

Verdict 5/5

Oda really pulled the rug out from under me by managing to redeem this one time villain that I used to love to hate. He then had to take it a step further by turning a classic ONE PIECE moment on its head. Oda knew what the readers wanted from him, but he never said we'd have to like it in the end. A scene that once made me laugh, now leaves me a little heart broken. That in itself is pretty incredible.

ONE PIECE will be on break next week. We'll just have to wait till then to discover what has happened to Trafalgar Law.

OP Up! Samurai Edition

So I just saw the third live action movie adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed myself. The live action film trilogy of Ruroni Kenshin were surprisingly good: great action choreography, beautifully designed sets, superb performances, talking parts were minimal and never boring. It very much felt like it was made for an international audience and it very much is that way.

This week's OP Up! selection is a few openings from Samurai themed anime. Hope ya enjoy!

Richie Branson Wants You in the Otaku Gang!

The Otaku King, Richie Branson, has returned again with a really fun and innovative new project. Taking an open source approach to nerdcore, he's released some instrumental music tracks so anybody - - you, you and you - - can saddle up with the #OtakuGang. The movement celebrates fandom and expression on all levels, and we really want to drop Richie a line to hear more about it.

ANIME VICE: Last year, you made some beats you'd produced freely available, encouraging fans to take them and create their own songs. What has the response been like?

RICHIE BRANSON: The response went really well. I received a bunch of remixes, covers, and entirely new songs created from the beats I released. I just released a second, larger collection of free-to-use beats and the response has been even bigger! I'm really excited to see what folks come up with to these tracks.

== TEASER ==

AV: Remix culture is a huge part of a hip-hop, obviously. Prior to #OtakuGang, or even your reign as Otaku King, how much did remixing relate to your early work as an artist?

RB: Very heavily. The first beats I ever created were hip-hop remixes to Mozart and Vivaldi pieces. Most of my formative years as a producer were spent flipping and remixing as many samples as I could find.

Remixing has an even bigger impact in the nerdy rap scene...folks go crazy over hearing hip-hop beats set to their favorite video game & anime tunes. It's one thing to drop an ATTACK ON TITAN rap, but it's a completely different experience to drop one over a hip-hop rendition of "Vogel Im Kafig" from the AoT soundtrack.

AV: If somebody reading wants to join #OtakuGang, how can they get involved? What if they can't rap?

RB: I see #OtakuGang as a completely open & leaderless movement. I don't intend on discriminating based on talent level or artistic outlet. If nothing else, I wanted to create a community where people can grow their artistic talents and express their fandom.

OtakuGang.com will serve as a hub for folks to broadcast their otaku-influenced fan art...whether it's in the form of music, visual art, anime music video, cosplay, etc. Anyone with a creative project they wish to share through the #Otakugang movement can send their work to submissions@otakugang.com !

AV: When are you thinking the first #OtakuGang compilation album will be dropping? Have you picked any tracks yet?

RB: I'm hoping to have the first #OtakuGang compilation out by May. I anticipate it being pretty big. I've already received a few dozen tracks since the first set of tracks were made available last year, and I'm already seeing works based on the new beats I released.

When Did PARASYTE Jump the Shark?

Revisiting JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE: ALL STAR BATTLE

One of the most memorable, and enlightening, gaming experiences I ever had was at E3 a few years back, when I stepped up to play STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN and VIRTUA FIGHTER 5 in quick succession. I'd grown up with all three franchises, of course, but it wasn't until that moment that I realized what importance story had in gaming - - even fighting games.Every match that queued up in SFxT established so much conflict before “FIGHT!” was ever shouted. This character had a grudge to settle with that character. These characters were best friends, though, so they were only sparring. And so on. Whatever the crisscross was, some story would be told over the course of two or three minute-long bouts.

There were no such contexts with VF5. It was never anything more than, say, a ninja going up against a sumo. While STREET FIGHTER and TEKKEN put a lot of effort into their characters' backstories - - and thoroughly explored those backstories in countless licensed manga and anime - - VIRTUA FIGHTER never bothered with any of that. As such, for as pretty as VF5 looked, I couldn't be bothered to finish more than one match. I lost interest that quickly, because there was no story; and thus, no intrigue.

So, what's the point of this anecdote?

== TEASER ==

Skip ahead to today - - after I've “dug deep” into Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders, et al. I've had this nagging feeling that I never gave the game a proper shot, so calling up Metal Mike for a re-visit of his import felt quite overdue...

Suffice it to say, ALL STAR BATTLE might as well be a completely different game this time to me. As opposed to me being consistently befuddled by this deluge of the bizarre, I'm constantly marveling over how the developers have managed to cleverly incorporate so many details from the show. All the characters' peculiar Stands are there, along with all their signature shot-called attacks; and warm-blooded Hamon and its cold-hearted opposite vampirism factor in, too. Truthfully, the developers have put way more thought into logically connecting all the wild ideas that Araki seemed to just pull out of his brain, willy nilly. The battle stats for the commercial break cards actually mean something, and a fighter using Hamon will fair differently against a vampire than a Stand User. It's complex game. Maybe even a little too complex, at times.

The models have a gestural, cell-shaded look that recalls STREET FIGHTER IV. I've suspected that the 3D models from the shows' various intros were borrowed directly from this game, and my suspicion feel even more founded, now. The multi-media coordination is so direct (with every one of the show's voice actors showing up) that this game is very probably giving you a years-in-advance preview of how the next three or four seasons of the show will look and sound.

True 360 degree mobility differentiates it from other contemporary "2.5 D" fighters, though. Side-stepping factors into the gameplay a lot, but it's the death traps that prove to be the most interesting gimmick. Flourscenet stripes and clouds hint at potential dangers inthe level and, if you lead your opponent in the right position, they'll be dropped by Robert E.O. Speedwagon or run over by a Pillar Man's chariot. Again, the more you know about the series, the more you'll appreciate everything.

It's wonderful to write about an anime-inspired game and, for once, not need to throw my arms about how the actual game mechanics are playing second fiddle to the RPG stats. This isn't XENOVERSE or J-STARS,so breath easy. Maybe the only caveat I'd put on it is that it definitely leans more SNK than Capcom in terms complexity, but I'm sure plenty of you are cool with that. No bones about it, this is a fun and inventive fighter.
