BLEACH Ch. 617 Review

With the appearance of the Reio's right arm to hold the worlds together, the first cracks in Yhwach's armor have finally developed. Back on the Soul Society, the Captains are ready to move on to the Reiokyu, and Captain Shunsui's plan to use Aizen may have been too large of a gamble.

The Good

Henry Drummond, the 19th-century evangelist lecturer, is popularly credited as being the man who coined the term we now know as "God in the gaps". Just to fill you in. It's a popular term more often used by some groups to explain away the things that science doesn't have an explanation for..yet. After reading this chapter of BLEACH , I wonder what Drummond would think of this situation. The Reio, the plot's 'god', is holding the world together by filling in the gap of his recent bisection.

Ever since Yhwach had gone all bug-eyed on us a few weeks back, I had been anticipating when we'd finally discover his blind spot. He would have to have one, if he was to be ultimately defeated by the hero. I believe we've finally had our first clue. Anything that deals with the Reio doesn't seem to register with this new ability Yhwach has. That's very interesting.

The Bad

Who could have predicted this could have gone so wrong?

Surprisingly enough, I didn't find myself hating the later scene with Aizen. If anything, I actually find this focuses on one of his more interesting attributes. You may then ask yourself why I'm listing this among the bad. My problem isn't with Aizen. It's with Captain Shunsui being such a massive dolt.

If he was only granted access to use three of the keys, why did he bring all of them and show them to Aizen? Now, I'm only working off my own theory here, but I have a good idea of what happened. Shunsui fell for another in Aizen's long line of hypnotic manipulations. While Shunsui thought he was only using one key, it's going to be revealed next week that he actually used all but three.

I hope that this was all sort of some plan of Shunsui, otherwise I'll be terribly disappointed he could be such a fool to allow himself to get tricked in this way.

Verdict 4/5

Now that the heroes have witnessed this vulnerability, how long will it be until Ichigo can exploit it? Will Ichigo become the host of the Reio's left arm -- wherever that may be?

Shunsui's actions aside, I found myself enjoying the scene with Aizen. I get this feeling that the only reason he's not completely free is because Aizen didn't want it, and he wants Shunsui to know it. That's some Hannibal Lecter-level manipulation right there. Such an awesome villain move helps me to ignore how much his character annoys me.
