Oh, kiss my ass. What a bunch of hokum. Give me those wasted 22 minutes back. Please.
My suspicion that we were in store for another pointless non-ending was on the money. There's no way the show can right itself, now. It's too late. And I can't be frustrated, because I've known this was coming for a long time. Maybe I should I be grateful that Shinchi at least killed Goto during their final duel?
Although, wait... he didn't, did he? Oh, shit.
== TEASER ==
Please don't be fooled. Shinichi doesn't say anything profound, nor coherent, during his ramble over Goto's semi-dead body. The crew is attempting to make big, important points about life, and instinct, and the universe, or whatever, of course. But his blather has all the clarity of “deep thoughts” mumbled by some kid who just took a long, deep huff off a shit-brown Crayola marker. And it has all the reaching, tenuous pretension (and incoherence) of the concluding paragraph in a second grade book report.
If you're having a heated message board argument, and you need some textbook demonstration of inauthentic, forced characterization - - a Platonic ideal of such bad writing, as it were - - you needn't look any farther than this episode.
It makes no sense that Shinichi would spare Goto, at any stage of this fight...
It is not character growth that makes him listlessly shrug this threat off...
It is not believable that he'd entertain the thought of letting Goto murder more humans...
…unless he's meant to be understood as high in this scene. Whatever he learned over 22 episodes, he forgot, because he voluntarily killed his own brain cells.
Watching this on a streaming service like CrunchyRoll makes me wish I'd seen it on some hard copy instead. I want a more physical way to express my distaste. I want to snap a DVD disc in half, crumple the packaging into a ball and just slam it all into the nearest trash bin. It's that stupid.
Watch this episode and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.
