Annotated Anime: Brynhildr in the Darkness Episode 2

After the weirdness of the first episode of Brynhildr , it finally fins a groove of its own, and I'm pleased to see a growing familiarity between Elfen Lied (a personal favorite series of mine) and this show, especially in the character designs and the "lab" mentioned throughout where Kuroha was kept. In many ways, Kuroha reminds me of a more intelligent and saucy Nyu, only a lot more independent and self-sufficient.

Of course, Murakami is tasked with taking handouts from school to Kuroha and realizes the address she provided the school with was the observatory where he likes to spend his time, but she's actually "living" in an abandoned village. Conveniently, he finds her in the first place he looks, because there's always an inhabitable space in the middle of nowhere, right? Murakami convinces Kuroha to stay in school, but not before this weird inhuman wail interrupts them from a nearby house.

That's where Kuroha and the paralyzed Kana live, and while they explain the wail away as Kana's voice box malfunctioning, it sure sounded like the wails of someone bound and gagged and wanting to escape to me. Kana is another witch, but the installation of that weird device on her neck took away her mobility in exchange for powerful precognitive abilities. She looks like a doll in Gothic Lolita clothing, but her cute exterior hides an obnoxious tsundere character who accosts Murakami for being a pervert. Why does every man in anime have to be a "pervert" again? [Editor's Note: Brittany it's THE LAW, shhhh!]

Kuroha and Kana are living quite meagerly in that little house together, and Kana warns Kuroha that another of their kind has been taken. We get to see a little taste of what happens when witches who are captured are punished for their crimes: they melt away into nothing. No wonder they don't want to be caught.

I'm calling it now: I'm pretty sure Kuroha is a clone and this is going to come into play somehow, but I don't know how or what's going to go down. I know I want to see less of Kana and more of the other witches they show in the opening, but from here on out Karen will be taking the reins and delivering her thoughts on the series week after week. I'll still be watching, but she's going to do the show great justice, so look forward to that!
