The Dose: Old School Thursday

For today's weekly flashback we go back to 1997, and pay our respects to one of the most beloved video games of all time, Final Fantasy VII. Rated by many as their favorite RPG, Final Fantasy VII was the game that kicked the series not only pushed the Playstation system to its limits, but also redefined modern JRPGs. The game had a memorable, faulted group of heroes, amazing graphic, and one of the baddest enemies of all times. There's no forgetting Sephiroth.

The final battle of the game featured one of the most bone chilling, anxiety inducing songs ever to grace video games, One Winged Angel --Sephiroth's theme. The song was composed by the legendary Nobuo Uematsu, considered by many to be the greatest video game composer of all time. It was actually the first Final Fantasy song to have lyrics. He has mentioned in interviews that one of his main influences for the awe inspiring song was the theme from Hitchcock's Psycho. Very appropriate and effective.

The version we have today is actually the one reworked for the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children movie, and performed by Distant Worlds orchestra, led by the charismatic Arnie Roth. If you're a fan of Final Fantasy, or music there is no missing this concert. I have to admit when they played this song last time the show came through Chicago, it actually brought a tear to my eye. One of the most powerful compositions I've ever had the joy to experience.
