Oh-etsu Nimaiya shows Yhwach's Royal Guard no quarter as he takes them to school with a most unique zanpakuto and the skills that earned him his place among the Zero Squad.
The Good
What else can you say about this chapter other than, "OH, THE BRUTALITY!" I know that Kubo is much more generous with the blood splatter than say some of his contemporaries, Kishimoto and Oda; but this chapter takes things up a notch. I can't remember the last time I've seen so much blood and sinew go flying in manga. In one scene, Oh-etsu slices off a dude's face.
Maybe it has to do with the drought of sword action BLEACH has been going through recently, but there is just something about the swordplay here that feels intense and almost perfectly choreographed. You know that Oh-etsu must be something special, being the person who created the zanpakuto; but it was incredible watching him bound around dispatching Yhwach's guards in turn. Bonus points are also awarded for not explaining the sword until after he cuts them all down.
The Bad
I'm a touch confused in one area. I really thought that this Royal Guard was going to be the opponents thatIchigo's gang would fight. Why else would Kubo be dragging them all up to the Reiokyu? They'll need something to do other than watch in awe at Ichigo battle. I'm not sure how that's going to happen when Oh-etsu has seemingly just wiped them all out. The previous chapters built them up, and Oh-etsu just knocked them back down.
Verdict 4/5
It may have been odd with how thoroughly Oh-etsu has dispatched so many in a single chapter, but what else would one expect from a member of the Zero Squad? You'd want them to be the biggest bad-asses ever, right? It's one thing to tell us they're great, and a whole other to actually let he see them being great. Oh-etsu's personality may come across as the lost Black Eyed Peas member, but he's really been growing on me. It may not be a perfect chapter, but the action found within is spot on what I want from BLEACH fight scenes.
