PARASYTE -THE MAXIM- #1 -- Special Review

When I first heard about PARASYTE -THE MAXIM-, I honestly thought there was some mistake. You see, they were making a live action movie based on the exact same 90s manga property so they couldn’t also be making an anime, I reasoned incorrectly, and besides – that trailer for the movie didn’t even look that good.

Thankfully I was wrong, and as I mentioned in a recent Vice Pit, I was very excited to learn that PARASYTE would be animated. I’m not sure what brought this series to life almost 10 full years after its initial conclusion, but it’s about damn time we had some good old-fashioned nightmare fuel from the Land of the Rising Sun.

== TEASER ==

They say idle hands are the devil’s playthings, and poor Shinichi has learned that the hard way. His right hand seems to have a mind of its own, doing things like playing with his smartphone in class or even groping classmates. And then it grows a mouth and starts talking to him, explaining that they are now bonded forever and have to work as a team to survive.

Where PARASYTE really shines is its absolutely disgusting monsters and gore. There’s viscera and fluids flying everywhere, and the transformations of the alien creatures showcase horrific imagination that evokes the likes of H.R. Giger and David Cronenburg. You’ll never look at corgis the same way again.

It’ll be interesting to see how Shinichi’s relationship with his new handmate develops over time. Currently Shinichi likens it to an unfeeling insect, yet at the same time he seems to empathize with its loneliness. Further, the parasite’s motives are not all that clear, and it’s hold on Shinichi seems to be developing as quickly as its own capacity for speech.

By the time the series ends… just who’ll be running the show?

Watch "Metamorphosis", the first episode of PARASYTE -THE MAXIM-, here.
