While Luffy is forced to face an enemy that he doesn't want to hurt, the battles across Dressrosa wage on. Zoro faces the mountain manPica, and is saved from a sneak attack from a surprising ally.
The Good
Who knew going into the Dressrosa Arc that in the later acts you'd be cheering on that one giant character that Luffy clobbered with one hit for beating up his bull-buddy? That's a turn that comes completely out of left field, but I really adore that touch about Oda. This isn't just a story about the heroes versus the villains with nameless extras standing in the background. Even those in the grey areas can have the spotlight, once in a while. I think it's just one of the creator's quirks that just makes his world feel so alive and fluid.
To date, only two of the officers in the Don Quixote Family have been KOed for the duration. The first byUsopp, and now Machvise through a heroic sacrifice play from Hajrudin. Anyone who's earned Zoro's respect has surely won mine, as well.
For as much as Baby 5's codependency issues irritate the ever loving hell out of me. They actually got a pretty decent laugh out of me this week. This is a match up that I care little for, but now I wouldn't mind dropping in again on these two down the line.
The Bad
About the only thing that impresses me about the Luffy and Bellamy fight is that the laughing pirate actually manages to get a solid hit in on Luffy. I never would have figured he'd be an armament haki user. In that sense, he stands a chance of hurting Luffy. On the other hand, he's suppose to be half dead, and he stands a chance of hurting Luffy.
From examining those panels, it appears that Bellamy is punching Luffy in the gut that's shielded by his armament hardening. The strength of Haki is suppose to be determined by the will of the user. Does Oda really expect me to believe that a fresh Luffy has a weaker will than a critically injured Bellamy? That doesn't even take into account Luffy's observation haki skills. I understand that I'm geeking out in the minutia here, but am I really out of line?
Verdict 3/5
This is another case in where I'm glad Luffy's scene was gotten out of the way first then followed by a solid closing from other characters. Zoro and a cast of extras rightfully steal the show out from under the protagonist. They give us the laughs and action that this chapter sorely needed. Add in that surprise assist from Hajrudin the giant, and it leaves me coming out of this issue feeling pretty good after a lackluster opening.
