Sure, why not make game about Mushroom Girls?

Really, why not? The last few years have seen a Cambrian Explosion for weird games, and people are now taking notice of good ol' Japan, which has been doing weird for longer than just about anybody.

Of course, I could just be undermining everything I just said by highlighting Kinoko Collection (literally Mushroom Collection), a shroom-themed ripoff of Kantai Collection. Then again, I said "weird", not "novel", so perhaps I'm in the clear. Plus, the game's still in development for web and smartphone platforms, so the "gameplay" section of the official site is thoroughly lacking in concrete details.

They are, however, doing extensive character reveals, tipping their hand that the intended hook here is the titular Mushroom Girls, who are embroiled in a century-long conflict with Bamboo Shoot Girls because of reasons. The character reveals include a number of mushroom girls both common and exotic, such as fungus-next-door Buna-Shimeji, the prim and proper Enoki, the quiet and sullen Nameko, the martial and strong Eryngii (aka the French Horn mushroom), the energetic Fukurotake (the Paddy Straw mushroom), and the eccentric Maitake. Still more art and details are promised, but I'm hoping to see some gameplay before I declare a fungal revolution to upend Kancolle's dominance.
