GHOST IN THE SHELL Movies Developments

It’d be hilarious if that was all the animation that’d actually been finished by this point. When half of the clip is company logos, can you call it a teaser anymore? Never mind a trailer...

So yes, there’s another GHOST IN THE SHELL movie coming out later this year. Most of the crew from ARISE is returning for it and, according to ANN’s translation, it’ll actually be marking the manga’s 25th anniversary. Between this, the new MMO game and the various OVAs, GitS is seriously rolling along as a real multi-media franchise (which would seem maybe a little counter to the movie’s anarchic sensibility? Maybe?).

Of course, we can’t forget about the other GitS movie. While Scarlett Johansson was circling around the Kusanagi role for a while, she officially signed on to the live-action Hollywood remake earlier this week. According to Variety, Rupert Sanders of SNOW WHITE & THE HUNTSMEN will be directing, while Avi Arad (formely of Marvel Studios) will be one of the producers. Seems like we’re well past the “rumored” stage at this point, and it’s a good bet you’ll be seeing GHOST IN THE SHELL at your local AMC within the next couple years. So, get used to it?

How you Vicers feel about this - - as diehard, dedicated otaku - - is question we’ll leave wide open for the talkback below. Will you prefer the movie previewed above to any Western remake? And supposing the latter is a success, do you figure it’ll help or hinder the chances of us ever seeing James Cameron’s decades-in-the-making BATTLE ANGEL ALITA remake?
