It's a full scale charge up and over the giant, stone form of Pica. Nothing will stop Luffy's advance. No bull about it. Well, some bull.
The Good
With all the explosions and visual spectacles going on in this chapter, one might mistake this for a Michael Bay film. What makes this different is there's a plot, and Moocy the bull has more character development than Shia LaBeouf in all the TRANFORMERS movies combined. If the producers of the anime adaptation follow the manga, I'm betting they're in a bit of a cold sweat thinking about the man hours it's going to take to animate everything that's going on in this chapter alone.
Zoro was especially impressive in this issue. Not only is he his normal bad-ass self while challenging Pica. He was smart to tell the assortment of mercenaries to stop wasting strength on chipping away at parts of Pica that can just regenerate.
The depth of the mystery behind Doflamingo has been growing since late Punk Hazard. Ever since, we've been getting tidbits about his past. Once a Celestial Dragon turned pirate, lost his mother and murdered his father, he's viciously protective of his crew, but he apparently also killed his brother, who was a commander in his forces. Enough is enough, Oda. I'm interested in knowing more. I'm at least open to a flashback. Just as long as it does go on for too long.
The Bad
Nothing really bad to say about the chapter. The end certainly feels like a set up for a flashback story. That's a little disappointing given all the wild action we've been gorging ourselves on these past few weeks. However, I'm open to it.
If you're not reading ONE PIECE in this digital format, I really think you're missing out. There's just so much double page art. I adore owning the physical media versions, but that's going to cut off one of the best action moments of this chapter as it will be buried in the center, between the pages. Oda's been doing that quite a bit lately. I wonder if he's been mainly focusing on the digital version.
Verdict 4/5
Yet another solid chapter out of Oda this week. It really steals the show out from under the others in the Shonen Trilogy. This is a chapter for you, if you were starving for some action. It really often astounds me how the creator can fit so much in the space he's allowed each week.
ONE PIECE will be on a break for a few weeks while Oda goes in for surgery to have his tonsils removed. It was roughly around this time last year that Oda started having complications, and it turns out that he's been working through pain all this time. That certainly explains all the breaks the series has been having. It seems that he's finally going in to take care of the problem. I wish him a speedy recovery. ONE PIECE will return on June 23rd.
