Does JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE Work as a Horror Story?

I still haven’t figured out what Hol Horse’s name is supposed to be in reference to. My first guest would be some folksy Neil Young album I’m just not familiar with, but that’s probably not it. Do any of you craftier Vicers know the answer to this riddle?

Maybe it’s just a consequence of trying to mix horror and action. One of my big complaints against ATTACK ON TITAN was that you had slog through long and slow passages (usually replete with excessive inner monologues) in order to get to the moments of exciting thrills. If I ever were being generous about it, I’d describe that as the crew intentionally lulling you into a sleepy state so the shocks would hit that much harder. However, I honestly think that’d be giving them too much credit. It was just uneven pacing.

Now, the counterpoint to that was DEATH NOTE. It had slower moments, but you could tell it was to build tension. Hell, one of the best episodes was occupied entirely by Light trailing an undercover agent on a sidewalk, and trying to pry her real name out of her through a very long conversation. However, DEATH NOTE was always presented as horror - - not horror/action - - so that’s probably why it worked.

So now we’ve got JOJO’s, seeming to put this whole genre theory to that test..

I was going to write this episode off, based on the A-Side, but once I got to the B-Side, it was clear that was the attention (not an effect that was stumbled upon, TITAN-style). There’s this exquisite tension once Enya’s reintroduced, where you’re waiting for her to strike, or for the Stardust Crusaders to figure out who she is. And when the shoe finally does drop, it’s of course with all the ridiculous aplomb this show has been defined by - - and it hits harder because you’ve been waiting for it.

Maybe it works better because this show's far less serious about itself than TITAN was?

Watch "Justice Part 1" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.
