You know… you guys are right. The harem aspects of this set-up have already gotten a lot harder to sit through.
That said, I’d still give this a so-so verdict because the underlying story is actually pretty well plotted out. And by ‘plotted,’ I simply mean that it abides by the rules of hooking interest, and holding that interest throughout various twists and turns. Especially when put next to the messy and unfocused opening episodes of ALDNOAH ZERO, the premise a country bumpkin (who also manages to kick ass!) learning the ropes of the big, cynical, complicated city comes out looking a lot clearer and stronger.

The show can get away with over-stuffing Night Raid’s roster because our lead is just as overwhelmed by them as we, the viewers, are. He hasn’t gotten a proper introduction to many of them yet, so we’re not expected to be that familiar with them either.
Now, that’s neglecting the harem tropes, which get pretty grating, pretty fast. To be honest, I’ve done a good job of avoiding most harem shows, so perhaps I can only sing some praises for this show because I’m not as utterly exhausted by the genre as the rest of you are. Maybe that raises another question of whether it’s fair to judge a story on its merits, or if it must be evaluated in the context of its genre, but let’s open that can of worms another day. I just can’t bring myself to care.
And that means this season actually didn’t yield any new shows that caught my interest enough to warrant full-coverage on this column. That’s actually a first, in all the time I’ve been doing this. Maybe I’ll have to go dig up another classic show,or… * GASP *… check in on SPACE DANDY again?
Watch “the Authority" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.
