Guess that answers my question about Kakyoin’s usefulness last time…
I still think he could use an episode or two to get a bit more back-story and personality. As is, he sort-of, kind-of fits in as the most naïve/sensitive member of the group; but again, the character profile really isn’t that defined. Put any of the other Stardust Crusaders into a given situation, and you can have a clear idea of the unique ways they’d respond to it. It’s still rather vague with him, though.
Speaking of which, I’m getting so much amusement out of how Jojo #2’s become this lovable doofus in his old age. Going from a young hothead to a big teddy bear who’s grown sentimental and soft after decades of just throwing money at problems is actually a pretty sensible character arc. He’s still capable, sure, but his eagerness to get into babying is just a hilarious counterpoint to any time he might seem badass.

Which is to say that the final scene works on a lot of levels…
Who’d have figured that Araki would develop this fecal fetish? Polnareff is threatened with being forced to lick a toilet clean. Now, Kakyoin’s making good on that threat with Mannish Boy. And I suppose if you’re going to show mercy to your deadly enemy, forcing him to eat shit is actually a pretty sensible way to make sure he’ll be thinking twice about any future acts of villainy.
Given how these two-parters have played, I’m getting the sense that the show is actually adapting material from the manga that should really only fill an episode and a half. I got the same feeling during episodes of ONE PIECE. Usually, the excitement of the second part makes up for any sluggishness in the first part.
Watch "Death 13, Part 2" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.
