Excellent Anime You Might've Missed -- BREAK UPS

Sometimes, you just feel like idly snooping through CrunchyRoll’s back catalogue. Sometimes, you even come across a gem.

It’s amusing that this is labeled as ‘slice of life’ when the premise involves a couple just stumbling across a ring-shaped time machine on the beach. I suppose ‘slice of life’ is just a shorthand in anime for anything involving scenes of genuine, human interaction. Or maybe ‘magical realism’ is too specific a label.

Anyway, this is a Korean-produced short that seems like it was made for a film festival as opposed to the usual programming block. It very much plays like a distilled version of ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND - - a final-shaped acorn next to that sprawling oak. Both the subject matter and art style favorably recall TATAMI GALAXY: more cartoonist, gestural linework that gets at the truth of regret and relationships through the lens of the fantastic.

My aversion to a slice-of-life shows here is that they’re usually criticism proof. You can rarely go wrong if your goal is simply to show a kid coming back from school and moping about how crummy his day was. So the time travel gimmick actually puts the drama into a sharper focus here. There were plenty of moments in this one/off relationship inventorying which I found relatable - - and I’m sure there are plenty you can relate to, too - - but it’s all kept a brisk clip that’s irresistibly diverting.

If you want anime that’s unlike 90% of the anime you usually watch, and you’ve got 15 minutes to kill, you’d do well to check this out…

Watch the short and decide for yourself.
