ANIME VICE: This is the first single you're putting out after the #BringBackRichie track infamously pulled you back into the game. What was the true reason behind your mysterious, self-imposed exile from anime rap?
RICHIE BRANSON: It was a combination of creative burn-out (I used all of my aura on Otaku King IV by composing an overture and fugue, then rapping over all of that) mixed with some crazy opportunities that came my way after doing some work on Russell Simmons and T.I.'s touch platform video game MISSION: G-ROK.
I finally had a chance to come up for air, haha...
AV: We thought that you were maybe imprisoned in the dungeon of a certain freaky family's mansion. Is that how you got into the Zoldyck mindset?
RB: Hah... my absence from my supporters certainly felt that way.
AV: HUNTER X HUNTER is notable for feeling like a completely different show from arc to arc. Which is the best -- the Hunter Exams, York New, Greed Island or the Chimera Ant Saga?
RB: Tie between York New and Chimera Ant.
The Phantom Troupe was off the chain (no Kurapika pun intended) in the York New saga. The Chimera Ant arc was so surreal...they really did a good job of making viewers connect with the plight of the heroes.
And, of course, it's impossible not to be awestruck by the battle between Netero and Mureum. I was actually turned onto HxH by some friends in Florida who showed me part of that fight. Needless to say, I was hooked. I binge watched dozens of episodes in order just to see that fight again.
AV: If Killua were ever forced to battle his best friend, Gon, which Hunter would walk away from the fight?
RB: Killua...unless Gon was trying to kill him, of course.
AV: What can we expect from this round of Otaku Tuesdays? Have you applied Nen training to your rap skills?
RB: I've applied Nen training, perfected my Hamon Breathing, and my South Dipper Holy Fist is stronger than ever.
