Parting Ways with AKAME GA KILL!

Oof. I had this same issue with CHAIKA, THE COFFIN PRINCESS

I realize it’s all fantasy at the end of the day, but there’s something about the specific sight of a gal pulling a BFG out (and a sniper a rifle, at that!) in a pseudo-medieval setting. It always strikes me as lazy imagining. Like, I can picture the crew planning this show, working out the steampunk world’s lore, and somebody raises his hand because they’ve simply got to fit a headshot in somewhere.

== TEASER ==

This show had a strong opener that cleverly subverted a lot of expectations, but it’s pretty quickly been overwhelmed by a lot of Stereotypical Anime nonsense that I just can’t get excited about. For a show that’s already paid a lot of service to the politics of this struggle, it doesn’t seem to have actually built that cohesive a world. Again, it’s all wrapped up in that scene with the ‘sniping.’ Really, it’s as if some craftier user hacked WoW so he crowbar his COUNTER STRIKE inventory in.

It’s still hard to argue with the intrigue of this naïve little hero getting introduced to gray morality by his new ‘co-workers,’ but it’s already gotten harder to see past how generic this show is. The designs aren’t memorable, the setting isn’t well-defined… I’ve only ever been praising this show in the very specific context of the season it’s debuted in. And now, I think I’ll be looking into other seasons for something better.

Watch "Kill Your Cares" and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode.
