A Hollywood remake of Space Battleship Yamato is prepping for launch

Fans of classic Japanese space opera have a reason to celebrate of be concerned, depending on your predisposition. US based Skydance Productions has acquired the rights to produce the remake of the seminal Leiji Matsumoto 1978 series Space Battleship Yamato, under the direction of Christopher McQuarrie. The company holding the rights to the series have confirmed the project, and the fact the movie will be using its US name, Star Blazers.

I was actually pretty excited for the Japanese live-action remake that was released in 2012, but it really was one of the worst things I've ever seen. The film actually ties with the Gatchaman remake for worst films Japanese films of the 21st Century so far. I'm hoping that something good might come of this, as the show is was strong on archetypes, and might benefit from a change up.
