Oh, but for symbols that have drastically different meanings from country to country...
Anybody else get some chortles out of how the election building, and the candidate Ging talks to, are both sporting a cannabis clinic’s green cross? Then again, Togashi might’ve been totally aware of that, and he might’ve put it in just to goof on his audience. If that were in fact the case, I doubt it’d be the first time he pranked his fans.
And I suppose I appreciate that a little more after watching FAIRY TAIL yesterday. This entire episode might’ve been focused on the minutiae of an administrative vote, but at least when that half-drawn clown shows up, you get the sense that everybody involved knows he’s supposed to look ridiculous.

I still don’t think I’ll be picking this series up again but, nevertheless, I couldn’t shake this morbid curiosity. Would Togashi actually detai every step of the election like he did with the Dark Tournament? Well, give the man marks for reliability, because that’s exactly what he’s doing. The furry MC even seems to be the same ring girl who was calling the matches at the Dark Tourney…!
Matt Murphy talks sometimes of the ‘critic’s conundrum’: the point you reach when you watch so much of this stuff that you’re not really enjoying it on its own terms anymore; you’re just delighting in getting more raw information to pick apart. To that end, I did find this episode highly amusing from a removed perspective, because it’s literally applying earnest, shonen kickass to what amounts to a student council debate in the class auditorium. Whether it's intentionally so, or unintentionally, it's still funny to behold.
I also find it amusing that Ging’s finally playing a more regular role in the show. I mean, first… he’s got the same youthful face as Gon, only with some arbitrary Don Johnson stubble. But, then… the show was easily set up as a boy’s quest for his deadbeat Dad at the beginning, but then Gon kind of forgot about it…? Kid barely ever mentions his pops after that incident with the haunted tape player, so is this really even that much of reconciliation here?
Watch "Approval x And x Coalition" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.
