ONE PIECE #668 -- Special Review

Normally, I don’t mind the tournament trope. If we’re all coming to shonen to watch fighting, there’s no problem with the creators occasionally just doing away with set-ups and giving us more of what we came for, right? Sure, the ‘Dark Tournament’ arc of YU YU HAKUSHO got repetitive sometimes, but I could still get swept up in it feeling like a real event. And the tourney arc I’ve been re-visiting in DRAGON BALL has just been hilarious. Each match is more like a skit.

Still, those arcs have their critics, and I’m feeling their pain, now. This whole B-plot with Rebecca is just the definition of a show spinning its wheels before the next legitimate story development comes along. The scenes with the bad guys toying with the less-than-bad-guys, and dropping them in the moat? It nearly motivated me to shout at the screen - - “Get on with it already!”

I’m having the hardest time keeping my attention on this and that’s saying a lot. It’s ONE PIECE! It’s so colorful. How could it ever be boring? Well…

Let’s call this a noble experiment. I tried to get back into this. I wanted to comment on it, because it’s still the #1 show. However, that was only going to work if I never stopped watching after ‘Punk Hazard,’ so I might as well quit while I’m (sort-of?) ahead. I’ll just use the opportunity to suggest that more series should probably get a ‘Kai’ edition. We’ve seen JOJO and PSYCHO-PASS get abbreviated versions - - and those were shows with little filler! ONE PIECE could definitely use one. Eesh.

Watch "the Final Round Starts! Diamante the Hero Shows Up!" and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.
