It goes to show how that there’s just so much anime running at any given time. How often have we talked about the Holy Shonen Trinity and neglected to mention this cute, bespectacled elephant in the room? Think ONE PIECE’s 678 episodes are impressive? Well, how impressive are they compared to 762? Oy…
And we’re not even talking about DORAEMON or POKEMON here, are we? I have to wonder why a show that’s popular enough to run for this many episodes doesn’t have that much of a presence in the American anime sphere. Seems like Crunchyroll only just recently started streaming it, so perhaps the rights have simply been tied up for a long time? I imagine importing the show has never been easy, lest anybody confuse this Conan with the talk show host or the barbarian.

Sampling this latest episode, I’d guess the better explanation is that this is maybe too old-fashioned. Even if it’s anime, teenagers simply aren’t going to get as excited about a junior detective on the order of Encyclopedia Brown, the Hardy Boys or, hell, Little Orphan Annie as they will for some complex mythos of super-powered asskickers.
This was a quaint enough diversion, but man, if it didn’t feel like the anime equivalent of reading three panels of a BRENDA STARR comic strip that’s still in the Sunday funnies for some reason. I was half-expecting the episode to end with a tutorial on how to make a telephone out of two Styrofoam cups and a ball of string.
Surely, there must some hardcore Detective Conan fans in our community, though? Surely, one of you might step up and explain the deeper appeal of this series to me? How has it captured enough hearts and minds to run for 21+ seasons? I’d honestly like to know.
