This plus-sized idol group is literally big in Japan

Here's one to file under the "Sure, why the hell not?" column: Pottya, (or more accurately, "P♡ttya"), a five-girl idol quintet consisting entirely of plus-sized girls. They made their debut last week, with their first live gig set for the end of the month, but we're already heavy with factoids about their founding. The girls auditioned from a pool of over two thousand applicants, and together hold a combined weight of 380kg (about 838lbs).

And lest you think Pottya was formed as some kind of cruel joke, the girls had this to say:

“It’s our job to shoot down claims about whether or not we can be idols because we’re not slim, now that we’ve gotten all of the members together and formed the group. Our aim is to become traditional singing and dancing idols, and give proof that even bigger girls can achieve their dreams.

We have a long list of many things we hope to accomplish, such as holding concerts, enjoying food festivals, and making drama appearances. So in order to make these things a reality, we want as many people as possible to know about the group, or at least one of our members. Everyone, we hope you’ll cheer us on and support us!”

Indeed. Sure, why not?
