WHEN SUPERNATURAL BATTLES BECOME COMMONPLACE #1 -- Special Review

I forget the name of it, but there was one show last year that very much felt like watching a decently-executed high school theater production of HARVEY.

For those unfamiliar, the premise of the play is that this guy walks around stage, insisting that his invisible friend, Harvey, is right beside him. Harvey’s a six-foot-tall rabbit, but the audience can’t see or hear him, and nobody else in the cast can either; so the humor/charm/frustration lies in this question of whether the guy’s crazy or not. More to the point, the play’s a common choice for any theater program that wants to broach fantasy, even though they don’t have a budget for flashy costumes or sets.

So, that’s what that other show felt like. It had a ghost, but you didn’t need to see the ghost. The meat of the show was this after-school club having an extended dialog about all this fantastical stuff; but it was expected that you were already familiar with all of it, so they didn’t need to actually show you anything.

Maybe there’s a new sub-genre arising here, because this show felt quite similar. It’s titled WHEN SUPERNATURAL BATTLES BECAME COMMONPLACE as if it’s a question that’ll soon be answered in a talent show sketch. It depends on you already being intimately familiar with all the tropes of anime (and hey - - there’s the super-powered boxing glove from KILL LA KILL! Trigger callback!). However, I hate to say it, but it plays about as well as a talent show sketch. It’s cute, and you appreciate the effort, but it’s not actually that funny.

And maybe it answers its own question. If anime characters ever did break that ol’ conceit, and started reacting to supernatural battles as if they were as commonplace as taking out your laundry… then supernatural battles would be about as exciting as taking out your laundry.

Watch this pilot and decide for yourself.
