YOUR LIE IN APRIL -- Special Review

We're checking out all the newest pilots this season! Read our write-ups on other Fall 2014 offerings like...

At this point, I ought start using the term ‘mech’ more figuratively. Obviously, not every anime is about mechs, but a whole hell of a lot of them are: so much so that, after a while, it feels like a figurine company is just pressing the mechs, and these show are simply built around them. Obviously, most of the animation budget goes into the lovely rendering of that mech (so it can be properly showcased), and my observation is that every series, of every genre, always has one major exploitative element which it lavishes the same sort of treatment upon.

KIDS ON THE SLOPE has rotoscope jazz drumming and FREE! has surface-breaking bullet time. Those are their mechs.

Well, YOUR LIE IN APRIL’s mech is photo-realistic piano playing. We don’t even just see it happen from one angle! We get another angle of it, happening simultaneously in the reflection of the piano itself! And yes, it’s impressive. I single it out because it’s really the only thing I feel like complimenting here.

I often throw my hands up when writing up slice-of-life shows because they’re essentially criticism-proof. What’s there to fault in a show that’s simply trying to capture the small, quiet moments of everyday existence? Well, I’ll put that excuse aside this time because, while this is certainly a pretty show, it handles the duties of a proper pilot rather sloppily. We’ve seen boys meet girl countless times - - there really has to be some twist to it. The telling of this story is so muddled, I couldn’t tell you what was unique about this pairing aside from the boy being an expert pianist and the girl being a… big, bouncy blonde, I guess?

Well, big whoop. Watch this if you want to collect some installation video to play in the back of your big recital. Beyond that, there’s not much that struck me.

Watch this pilot and decide for yourself.
