Can Luffy throw a punch at a man he calls a friend? He'll have to make a hard choice, if he wants to reach Doflamingo and save the people of Dressrosa.
The Good
At the risk of repeating myself, I had been vocal about my desire to see history repeat itself between Luffy and Bellamy once he reappeared in the early chapters of the Dressrosa Arc -- not to mention looking a lot like Rowdy Roddy Piper. Go look up Luffy's best punches on You Tube, and the strike on Jaya is always on the list. Such a one-sided victory against that arrogant jerk always seemed to scratch that sadistic itch.
Fast forward several years, and now I find myself ashamed that I ever wanted this to happen. It makes me wonder if Oda is the real sadist here. He knew people would be calling for another smack down when Bellamy popped back up. Little did any of us know that he'd make us regret that desire by tricking us into liking the rowdy pirate first.
My greatest regret is in not owning the Skypiea Arc volumes. I'd love to see how this week's chapter compares to the original compositions, from the punch and the panels leading up to it. It all looks so familiar.
The Bad
The only real fault I can find with this situation is in Bellamy's flawed reasoning for continuing his fight with Luffy. I just can't decide if Bellamy's knowledge that his actions don't make sense makes it any better or worse. Some will call it the determination of a man, and others will call it the rationale of a deluded moron. It all depends on who you ask, and they're both probably correct.
Verdict 5/5
Oda really pulled the rug out from under me by managing to redeem this one time villain that I used to love to hate. He then had to take it a step further by turning a classic ONE PIECE moment on its head. Oda knew what the readers wanted from him, but he never said we'd have to like it in the end. A scene that once made me laugh, now leaves me a little heart broken. That in itself is pretty incredible.
ONE PIECE will be on break next week. We'll just have to wait till then to discover what has happened to Trafalgar Law.
