Are You Ready for DEATH NOTE the Musical?

I suppose a musical adaptation of DEATH NOTE is no less appropriate than one for SPIDER-MAN or LES MISERABLES but... still... look at the playbill. Watch the video. Tell me you aren't giggling.

ANN has relayed a bunch of tidbits about this traveling show, listing the dates and locations for a show that will run from spring to summer, and move from Japan to South Korea. One detail adding to strangeness of this -- the producers hired American writers and composers who've worked with Whitney Houston and on projects like CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. Smart on their part, sure, but I can only imagine how much that'll make the more... uh... serious fans of the franchise bristle.

Interestingly, the actor playing Light's police inspector father is the same one who played him in the live-action movies. And now, with that unavoidable contrast, I have to say the musical translates the shinigami far more sensibly than the movies did. The two older actor playing Ryuk and Rem have understated outfits and hairstyles that broadly evoke the demons' outlandish fashion, as opposed to floating around ridiculous balloon versions like the movies did. If the Hollywood remake ever takes flight, I hope the producers take note.

What do you think of the video? Do like how the minimalist set-dressing leaves pretty much everything up to your imagination? Do you find it funny how, when the two actors playing Light are playing at reading the Death Note, it looks like they're actually singing out of sheet music? Let us know in the talkback, of course.
