BLEACH Ch. 613 Review

How long do you plan to just stand there?
How long do you plan to just stand there?

The fate of the slain Reio is still unknown as Ichigo finally catches up to Yhwach. Meanwhile, the 13 Court Guard are still readying themselves to join the battle above.

The Good

I was talking about the pacing, Kenpachi.
I was talking about the pacing, Kenpachi.

For as much as the characters kept repeating that Kenpachi was out of commission, I thought that wasKubo's way of putting him out of commission for the rest of the war. It's a classic plot device to take incredibly powerful characters out of play by either killing them off or wounding them to the point of incapacitation. It was a pleasant surprise to see him making an appearance in this week's chapter, and that he's still interested in finding Yachiru. I share his desire to know the answer to that one.

The creator led me by the nose to think one thing, then just dropped him back in to the story. That in itself was an interesting enough twist. I also have to applaud Nanao for being bold enough to face Kenpachi down in order to reason with him.

The Bad

Is there some sort of time distortion between the Reiokyu and the Soul Society? It's rather amazing just how much can happen on the Soul Society while Ichigo just stands there looking at Yhwach. I was willing to accept the diversion of last week, but that was under an understanding that we'd actually get some action in following editions. It's now just looking to be filler to make events feel more dramatic than they need to be.

'Maybe' Kubo has a reason for stepping away from Ichigo and pals, and drawing this moment out. What confuses me is why he's spending just so much time with the Soul Reapers. There are other sub-plots to tell in the Soul Society that are equally interesting, if not more so. There are the surviving Vandenreich, who are those mysterious Espada that came to the rescue back on Hueco Mundo, or what's happened to Tier Halibel? How about a little variety, for pity sake.

Verdict 2/5

It's staring to become a bad sign when what constitutes as the filler in a chapter is more entertaining than the main plot. For whatever reason, Kubo is reeeally dragging this event out. Perhaps there is some method to the madness, but I'm not seeing any sign of it yet. It's made more frustrating, because it's not as if there aren't other aspects of the story to tell.
