CASE CLOSED #764 -- Special Review

Oh, no! He's got little baggies of marijuana...!

Come to think of it, drugs are another thing that show up so infrequently in these shows, I wonder if Japanese television has especially strict rules about their depiction in its general standards and practices. Sure, it's not like you see that stuff in American toons, but half of these shows are the equivalents of prime-time and late nite programming, no? You'd figure more bad guys would be smugglers, or whatever.

== TEASER ==

Japan's anti-drug laws are far stricter than America's, I've heard, and if that's true, it certainly follows here . We see far more characters smoking cigarettes in anime than we do in US TV, and tobacco's definitely less maligned over there.

I harp on that little scene because it's pretty much the exact illustration of every old joke about Encyclopedia Brown or the Hardy Boys suddenly having to deal with real, adult crimes that are way beyond the frivolous junior detective cases they normally tackle. I know the premise of this show is that Conan's actually an adult P.I. who's been de-aged, but that scene still made me think of MYSTERY TEAM something fierce.

Given the dryspell of good, new shows this season, I think I'll be checking out more of CASE CLOSED. Whether it's week-to-week, or retro reviews of the earlier episodes, it'd certainly behoove me to check out more of one of the longest-running shonen serials (now that it's available for legal streaming). I suspect I'll always be chuckling the whole time, even when I'm enjoying it. There's something about applying convoluted, shonen tactics-breakdowns in the real world (like they do during the drug sting) that's just doubly ridiculous.

Watch this episode and decide for yourself, then read my thoughts on the previous episode.
