GOURMET GIRL GRAFFITI #1 -- Special Review

We're sampling all the new pilots this Winter. Check out our thoughts on...

And I believe our sampling of this season's new series is complete.

To be totally honest, I've been putting this one off for a while because, aside from CUTE HIGH EARTH DEFENSE CLUB LOVE, it's got to be the girliest show on the docket. That's small of me, and as such, I'm happy to admit I enjoyed this an anime about pastry baking.

For my money, every anime show has its “mech” - - the one flashy element which the biggest chunk of the animation budget is invested in. It isn't totally essential, and it's somewhat exploitational to a particular audience. In this case, the mech is the fried dumplings our heroine makes. It was actually a little... startling to watch. The level of texture put on the crust. The detail of rendering, when the gelatinous folds spread out as the characters bit in. It may be the best animated food item ever.

And it's a very heartfelt pilot. You can feel the significance cooking has for our lead, representing this point of connection with her grandma - - an ideal she's striving to achieve. And when her roommate's introduced, it's really the perfect sitcom set-up (although, they maybe come off as a little... closer than intended). It's very easy to picture this dynamic playing out rather delightfully over the course of the season.

DEATH PARADE is the only new show I'll be keeping up with but, all the same, this was a delightful way to pass a half-hour.

Watch this pilot and decide for yourself.
