ONE PIECE Ch. 775 Review

One man loses, but a friendship is formed.
One man loses, but a friendship is formed.

Franky The Cyborg vs. Senor Pink for the fate of the SMILE Factory. What began as a battle between the members of two rival pirate crews, ends in a flurry of punches, bruises, tears, and mutual respect.

The Good

Have a round on me, fellas.
Have a round on me, fellas.

Back when I saw some of the earlier trailers for the soon to be released METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN and saw the character Quiet, I thought she looked sort of ridiculous. I mean, she's a sniper wearing a string bikini and see-through, torn leggings. After watching one of the more recent game play trailers and witnessing her in action, I see her on a level of bad-ass that's only excelled by The Boss -- and that's saying something. That experience parallels my feelings after reading this week's ONE PIECE .

When the Dressrosa Tournament began and Senor Pink was introduced, I would have never guessed that I'd remotely care about his back story. I was sure Oda had a reason for this design choice. As strange as it may sound, there are reasons grown men dress as babies. It just never dawned on me that we'd go into this much detail, and that I'd enjoy it has much as I did with this chapter. I understand why Senor Pink does it after reading this issue, and he's a pretty cool dude.

Zoro gets a lot of credit for being the man's man in the ONE PIECE series, and nine out of ten time's I'd agree, but this brawl of Franky against Senor Pink was a real fight between admirable men. No matter who won this fight. I would have been happy, and I have this feeling that the fighters here would share that sentiment, as well. This is fine example of machismo and resolve.

I know I've mentioned this in previous reviews, but it can often times be jarring by how brutal Oda can be to characters in flashback. Especially, when in contrast to how durable characters are in current events. Last time, we saw the mass genocide of children shown in graphic detail. This week, it was the tragic death of a new born baby. Anyone who says this series is nothing but light-hearted nonsense doesn't know what they're talking about.

The Bad

I'm sure someone, somewhere could find something to complain about with this issue, but I'm not one of them.

Verdict 5/5

Not only did this week's edition of ONE PIECE finally showcase one of the Straw Hat matches, answering an issue that I've been having with the series in previous weeks; but it also worked in a surprisingly emotional story that would be worthy of a made for TV drama. It was an emotional sucker punch that I never saw coming for one of the more comical members of the Don Quixote Family. I'm with Franky. I've left with a level of respect for Senor Pink, and a hope to see him again in the future.

ONE PIECE will be on break next week. Wouldn't it be cool if Oda spent the week off talking with Hideo Kojima regarding some kind of collaboration project? I don't think our minds are ready for such a game.
