Aniplex USA recently announced that they're releasing Persona 3: #1 Spring of Birth Blu-ray in the US on May 20. It'll come in two flavors: a normal vanilla release and a neapolitan-esque special edition. The special edition comes with the following:
- an original soundtrack CD
- special pretty box art by the character designer/animation director Keisuke Watabe
- new cover art
- a 48-page booklet
- a translation for said booklet
- 10 stickers
- four key-art postcards
Both versions come with the following on disk:
- the original 90 minute cut of the film
- the director's cut, which includes seven minutes of additional footage
- trailers
- commercials
- an audio commentary that doesn't include subtitles.
The normal edition retails for $74.98, while the special edition is $99.98. However, Aniplex will do you the favor of dropping the prices down to $54.98 for the normal edition and $79.98 for the collectors. How gracious of them.
It's pretty passé to complain about Aniplex's pricing structure, but great ready to hear about it again. Say what you will about the special edition, as that's targeting super-fans that are willing to drop a lot of money on their passions. For those folks, dropping another $20 isn't that bad, all things considered. I'm talking about asking $55 for a single movie on BD. That is downright bonkers, especially when they aren't even bothering to translate the additional material. That's right, that much money for a single flick and you can't even enjoy everything that you're paying for. Any sort of excitement I had at picking up this movie is dead.
